Housing Specialist

The Housing Specialist is responsible for assisting shelter residents with securing and maintaining permanent housing. The Housing Specialist works collaboratively with case managers, landlords, brokers, community agencies and clients to identify appropriate housing opportunities, coordinate housing placements, and support clients throughout the housing stabilization process. The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, resourceful, and knowledgeable about housing resources and social service systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients in identifying and securing permanent housing opportunities
  • Conduct housing assessments and develop individualized housing plans
  • Assist clients with housing applications, documentation, and subsidy programs
  • Establish and maintain relationships with landlords, brokers and housing agencies to expand housing opportunities for clients
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with landlords, government and other community agencies to expedite clients rehousing efforts
  • Educate clients on tenant rights and responsibilities to prevent recidivism
  • Provide weekly workshops on topics such as:
    Types of housing, housing interviews, lease negotiations/agreements, budgeting, and housing responsibilities
  • Coordinate apartment viewing and accompany clients when necessary
  • Maintain accurate client records, case notes, housing placement data, and required rehousing efforts
  • Collaborate with shelter staff, case managers, and external partnering agencies to ensure coordination of services
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and training sessions as required
  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies, funding requirements, and housing regulations

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in housing placement, case management shelter services
  • College student may be considered with at least two years of experience in the direct role of housing specialist
  • Knowledge of housing resources, public assistance systems, and supportive housing programs
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders
  • Strong organizational skills and documentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CARES
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • NY Driver License a must
  • Knowledge of navigating the five boroughs via public transportation and/or driving

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a shelter environment with frequent interaction with clients from all paths of life. Travel is required to attend appointments, housing viewings, or agency meetings. Ability to manage crisis situations in a calm and professional manner.

Schedule:

Ability to work one flexible schedule that also includes a late night and one weekend day
