Job Title:
School Supportive Counselor

Reports To:
Transfer High School Program Director

Location:

- East Brooklyn Community High School

Position Type:
Part-Time

SCO is seeking a Supportive Counselor to serve transfer high school students at East Brooklyn Community High School (EBCHS). The counselor is typically on-site two to three days per week, Monday through Thursday, and provides short-term, school-based support rather than ongoing therapy. In keeping with EBCHS’s collaborative school culture, staff members may identify students who could benefit from supportive counseling, preferably delivered by a licensed social worker or mental health counselor.

Students who need a higher level of care should be referred to the appropriate school staff for follow-up and, when necessary, external services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Document all student sessions and services in the DOE system.
  • Provide supportive counseling to students, including short-term emotional support and guidance.
  • Engage the student body and clearly explain the role of the Supportive Counselor, including the types of support available.
  • Help students understand that the counselor is available as a trusted person to talk to without the pressure of academic performance, while still allowing space to discuss academic concerns when needed.
  • Work with students to build coping skills and strengthen positive decision-making.
  • Meet with students who have experienced conflict within the school building.
  • Meet with students who are consistently disengaged or not responding to SCO or DOE staff outreach.
  • Provide crisis intervention support when appropriate and within the scope of the role.
  • Collaborate with DOE and SCO staff to coordinate support and respond to student needs.
  • Provide additional related support services as needed and appropriate.
  • Master’s degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited program.
  • Current New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential required.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential preferred.
  • At least two years of post-graduate clinical experience working with teens and families preferred.
  • Experience applying intercultural communication skills and a culturally responsive lens preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
