Software Engineer w​/Back-end Focus

Overview

This role is a Staff Software Engineer with a backend focus. You’ll be the person others look to for backend architecture decisions, working alongside full-stack engineers while setting technical direction for how our systems are designed, built, and scaled. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys building things from scratch, making pragmatic architectural calls, and taking ownership of applications from end to end.

• Craft Bespoke Applications and Services:
  Take ambiguous product ideas and turn them into working web applications and tooling. You’ll shape system architecture, define core abstractions, and own how backend services, APIs, and data models fit together to support real user-facing experiences.
• API & Integration Development:
  Design and expose secure REST, gRPC, and Graph
  
  QL APIs with clear versioning and data contracts; integrate with API gateways for routing, throttling, and tenant isolation.
• Workflow Orchestration:
  Implement event‑driven and scheduled workflows supporting recurring simulations, executive scenario generation, and real‑time alerts.
• Data Platform Integration:
  Build and maintain connectors to data lakes, time‑series databases, and noSQL and relational systems; manage schema evolution and enforce data contracts.
• UI / UX fundamentals:
  Consult and work comfortably with front-end engineers and codebases – encouraging best-practices and endorsement of modern UI technologies and capabilities.
• Security & Governance:
  Implement authentication, authorization, secrets management, encryption, and comprehensive audit logging aligned with enterprise security and compliance requirements.
• Reliability & Performance Ownership:
  Define SLIs/SLOs, tune system performance, implement resilience patterns, and design for graceful degradation under load.
• Observability & Operations:
  Instrument services with metrics, logs, and traces; build dashboards and alerts to support on‑call and operational readiness.
• CI/CD & Deployment:
  Contribute to automated testing, continuous integration, and progressive delivery pipelines across development, staging, and production environments.
• Cross‑Functional
  
  Collaboration:
  
  Work closely with simulation scientists, data engineers, ML engineers, SRE, and product teams to deliver end‑to‑end Digital Thread capabilities.
• Documentation & Reporting:
  Produce clear technical documentation, design notes, and runbooks to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.

• Experience:
  
  10+ years designing, building, and operating backend systems in production cloud or hybrid environments.
• Backend
  
  Languages:
  
  Strong proficiency Typescript and Python for integration and tooling; solid SQL skills.
• API Development:
  Hands‑on experience with REST and at least one of gRPC or Graph
  
  QL, including schema management and API lifecycle/versioning.
• Messaging & Streaming:
  Production experience with Server-Sent Events, Kafka or cloud‑equivalent platforms; understanding of message delivery semantics
• Data Stores:
  Practical experience with both noSQL (Mongo
  
  DB) and relational databases (Postgres/MySQL), Redis, and time‑series databases; familiarity with data lakes and analytical warehouses.
• Cloud & Containerization:
  Experience deploying and operating containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Security:
  Experience implementing OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mTLS/TLS, RBAC/ABAC, and audit logging patterns.
• Reliability & Observability:
  Familiarity with SLIs/SLOs, incident response, and modern observability stacks.
• Software Quality:
  Strong test discipline, code review practices, and performance‑aware design.
• General Data Wrangling:
  Experience in aggregating and organizing data from various sources for coherent, integrated analytics.
