The Pitch
Slate's iOS app started as a fully native Swift application - a powerful video editor used by content teams at the NFL, Amazon, and top global brands. We're now evolving the architecture: the editor stays native (Swift), while everything around it - login, homepage, brand overview, navigation - is moving to React Native so we can share code across iOS and Android.
We've already shipped the first hybrid version - basic RN screens alongside the native editor - so the foundation exists. Currently, the app is ~90% Native Swift and ~10% React Native. Your goal is to shift the non-editor views to reach a 50/50 split over the next 12 months. Now we need someone to evolve it: refining the boundary between native and RN, building out the React Native layer, and crossing into Swift when needed.
You'll shape how these two worlds coexist cleanly and ship a mobile app that feels native throughout.
We're a small remote team across 15 countries where your work ships fast and gets noticed. You'll ship to production your first week and own meaningful features within weeks.
What You'll Actually Do
Own the native/RN architecture boundary
- Evolve the existing boundary between React Native and native Swift as the app grows
- Design the bridge layer so both sides communicate cleanly
- Make pragmatic calls - in close collaboration with the native iOS team - on what belongs in RN vs. native, optimizing for code sharing without sacrificing editor performance
Build the React Native layer
- Build and own the non-editor surfaces: login, homepage, brand overview, navigation, and new features as they come
- Ensure these screens feel native and performant on both iOS and Android
- Set patterns and conventions for the RN codebase that the team can build on
Cross into native when needed
- Work in the Swift codebase to integrate with the editor and platform APIs
- Debug issues that span the RN/native boundary
- Contribute to app releases and mobile CI/CD alongside the native iOS team
- Monitor crash rates, performance metrics, and user-facing quality
- Drive improvements to startup time, navigation fluidity, and overall polish
Work with people who care about craft
- Partner with editor engineers, designers, and the video platform team
- Collaborate with designers who sweat the details
- Help shape mobile product direction based on technical possibilities and constraints
You'd Be a Great Fit If
You have the experience:
- 5+ years building production mobile applications
- Strong React Native expertise - you've built and shipped real apps, not just prototypes
- Solid iOS native experience (Swift or Objective-C) - you can read, debug, and write native code confidently
- You've worked on hybrid architectures where native and cross-platform code coexist
- While deep Android native knowledge isn't required, you should be comfortable opening Android Studio and debugging the React Native layer on Android devices
You’ve done work like this before:
- Defined or evolved a native-to-RN migration strategy
- Built and maintained bridge modules between React Native and native code
- Participated in mobile app release processes (builds, signing, App Store)
- Solved performance problems specific to mobile (startup time, memory, animations)
You work the way we work:
- You own the outcomes, not just the tasks
- You communicate clearly in English, both written and verbal
- You use, or want to use, AI tools to move faster - and take responsibility for the output
