Software Engineer, Backend Developer, Python

We are seeking an experienced Python Software Engineer to join a team responsible for building the data platforms, distributed systems and research infrastructure that power advanced analytical and data-driven decision making.

This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, large-scale data processing and platform development. You will work closely with researchers, data scientists and engineers to create scalable systems that enable the efficient ingestion, transformation and analysis of large and complex datasets.

• Design, develop and maintain high-performance Python applications and services.
• Build and optimise distributed systems that process and manage large-scale datasets.
• Develop data pipelines and research platforms that support analytical workflows and experimentation.
• Collaborate with researchers, data scientists and engineers to create tools that accelerate data exploration, feature development and model evaluation.
• Improve the scalability, reliability and observability of production systems.
• Drive performance optimisation across data-intensive applications and backend services.
• Contribute to architecture decisions, engineering standards and best practices.
• Take ownership of projects from design through deployment and ongoing support.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve platform capabilities, developer productivity and system efficiency.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience using Python.
• Strong experience building distributed systems, backend platforms or data-intensive applications.
• Proven experience working with large datasets and scalable data processing solutions.
• Experience developing software within Linux-based environments.
• Solid understanding of software architecture, systems design and performance optimisation.
• Experience with modern engineering practices including testing, automation and CI/CD.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience building research, analytics or data platforms.
• Exposure to distributed computing or parallel processing technologies.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerisation or orchestration technologies.
• Familiarity with high-performance computing environments.
