Directly building and deploying AI models in production healthcare settings; heavy focus on hands-on AI deployment, evaluation, and integration.
About the RoleOpenAI is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to lead end-to-end deployment of AI models in healthcare organizations, translating clinical and operational workflows into production systems while ensuring PHI, HIPAA, and regulatory safeguards. The role combines hands-on architecture, implementation, evaluation, and customer collaboration to drive production adoption and measurable workflow impact.
Job Description RoleOpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team for Healthcare seeks an engineer to own end-to-end deployments of OpenAI models within healthcare organizations (payers, providers, health systems, and healthcare technology companies). The FDE will lead technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff, translating customer workflows, data, infrastructure, and regulatory constraints into production AI systems.
Key Responsibilities- Own technical solution design and delivery from discovery through production deployment and handoff.
- Partner with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to define scope, technical requirements, and measurable outcomes.
- Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, EHRs, claims systems, and operational tools.
- Build systems with safeguards for PHI, HIPAA, privacy, security, authorization, governance, auditability, and other regulated-delivery requirements.
- Define and operationalize evaluations, validation evidence, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria aligned to customer acceptance thresholds.
- Use evaluation results, error analysis, observability, and customer feedback to improve reliability, performance, model selection, and production readiness.
- Distill learnings into reference architectures, interoperability and integration patterns, evaluation harnesses, security controls, and reusable primitives for regulated enterprise environments.
- 6+ years of experience in software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, or comparable roles, with technical depth and hands‑on ownership.
- Experience operating as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
- Proven track record of technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff for complex customer-facing or enterprise systems.
- Healthcare experience preferred: payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, or interoperability standards such as Epic, HL7, and FHIR.
- Exposure to provider or health‑system workflows (clinical operations, revenue cycle management, patient access, contact centers) or EHR/interoperability technologies (Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH, HL7, FHIR, HIEs).
- Strong judgment around AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability.
- Role is based in New York City with a hybrid work model (3 days in the office per week).
- Relocation assistance is offered.
- Travel up to 50% is required.
- Background checks will be administered as applicable.
