Position Overview

The Operations Inspector in the Furniture and Operations Unit (F&O) of the Office of Livable Streets (OLS) assists in the Universal Bus Stop Seating and Edge Object management initiatives. The role ensures the implementation and maintenance of Democratic Transportation’s goal to install a bench or leaning bar at every eligible bus stop in New York City over the next ten years. Responsibilities include managing outreach to maintenance partners, selecting street‑furniture locations, conducting inspections, and maintaining accurate records in a Microsoft Access database.

Responsibilities
  • Manage outreach to maintenance partners, business improvement districts, and elected officials.
  • Use siting criteria to select suitable locations for street furniture.
  • Measure and photograph installed street‑furniture sites.
  • Verify correct installation using technical site plans.
  • Conduct inspections of bus stops and Street Improvement Projects (SIPs).
  • Create site surveys, installation plans, and inspect installed assets.
  • Maintain records in a Microsoft Access database and mobile applications.
  • Generate maintenance work orders.
  • Coordinate with community groups and elected officials to address local needs and concerns.
  • Ensure seating and way finding elements improve accessibility, comfort, and safety for transit riders.
  • Contribute to the equitable implementation of street furniture across neighborhoods citywide.
  • Work in the field during all seasons, traveling by bike, walk, or mass transit.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of full‑time satisfactory experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies.
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a satisfactory combination of experience and/or college education equivalent to the above; college credits may be substituted at 30 semester credits per year of experience, with at least 6 of the substituted credits in the related field.
License Requirements

Must possess a motor‑vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York, maintained for the duration of employment.

Assignment Level II Requirements

In addition to the Qualification Requirements, one additional year of full‑time satisfactory experience working in Assignment Level I or described in item 1, totaling three years of experience, including supervising regulation of vehicular traffic or conducting traffic studies.

Assignment Level III Requirements

In addition to the Qualification Requirements, two additional years of full‑time satisfactory experience working in Assignment Levels I and II, totaling four years of experience, including supervisory experience as described.

Preferred Skills
  • Professional experience in the built environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience with mapping software (ArcGIS), Computer‑Aided Design (CAD), and MS Access.
Work Location & Hours

55 Water Street, New York, NY 10041. 35 hrs. per week; 9 am‑5 pm.
