NYCSBUS has a opening for a
CDL Trainer
who will play a critical role in the Safety and Training Department by delivering high-quality instruction to future School Bus Drivers. In this role, you will lead both classroom and behind-the-wheel training, ensuring that all trainees are fully prepared to safely operate school buses and successfully pass the New York State CDL exam.

NYCSBUS (NYC School Bus Umbrella Services Inc.) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have Individualized Educational Programs. It operates more than 800 school bus routes throughout NYC with a staff of approximately 1,800 employees across six locations. Key

Work Responsibilities:
Behind-the-Wheel & Yard Instruction
  • Deliver hands‑on training on vehicle operation, including backing maneuvers, defensive driving, and real‑world road scenarios.
  • Train students in both yard environments and on public roadways.
  • Ensure trainees demonstrate safe driving habits and confidence before road testing.
Classroom Instruction
  • Conduct classroom sessions on
    FMCSA regulations
    and Entry‑Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory.
  • Prepare and deliver structured lessons that support CDL exam readiness.
  • Reinforce safety protocols, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate trainee performance and provide constructive, actionable feedback.
  • Adapt training methods to meet individual learning styles and skill levels.
  • Support trainees throughout the program to ensure successful completion.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all training activities adhere to NYCSBUS, DOT, and federal/state safety regulations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture in all training environments.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of trainee attendance, progress, and performance.
  • Complete required training documentation and compliance logs in a timely manner.
Vehicle Inspection & Equipment Oversight
  • Perform and teach daily pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of training vehicles.
  • Report any mechanical or safety concerns immediately.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support onboarding training efforts in coordination with HR and Compliance.
  • Assist with refresher trainings, safety sessions, and compliance initiatives.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of training materials and delivery methods.
  • Perform other related duties to support the Safety and Training Department.
Qualifications | Job Competencies
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Valid
    New York State CDL Class A or Bwith
    Passenger and School Bus Endorsements
  • 3‑5+ years of verifiable driving and/or training experience
  • Strong knowledge of
    DOT regulations
    and basic vehicle mechanics
  • Ability to effectively teach, coach, and mentor adult learners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to work in a structured, safety‑focused environment
  • Flexibility to work
    Monday – Friday (6:30 AM – 3:00 PM)and occasional weekends
