School Bus Driver Trainer (CDL) - New York Address Village of Pelham, NY, US Job Description
Zum is seeking a skilled and experienced Driver Trainer to join our team in New York. The successful candidate will be responsible for training new and existing bus drivers, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintaining a safe transportation environment for our students.
Key Responsibilities- Drive a school bus on designated routes
- Proactively recruit individuals to apply and train them to become School Bus Drivers
- Provide classroom instruction and behind the wheel training of applicants and bus drivers to ensure successful completion of training and testing; recommend upgrades as necessary
- Provide ongoing training and performance evaluations for all driver employees
- Administer and maintain Company random drug/alcohol testing and pre-employment drug/alcohol testing program in conjunction with the corporate office
- Develop and conduct regularly scheduled driver safety meetings
- Assume primary responsibility in responding to personal injury and vehicle accidents by on-scene investigation and preparing and submitting reports to the corporate office in accordance with Company policy.
- Investigate customer service complaints relative to safety issues and take appropriate corrective action.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Possess all valid applicable state licenses and other required certifications to operate company vehicles
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement
- Possess all valid applicable state licenses and other required certifications to train and evaluate school bus drivers
- Must hold current NYSED School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI) certification — or must have completed the NY Basic School Bus Driver Course, the Advanced School Bus Driver Course (or a DMV-approved equivalent), and hold a valid NY CDL with S endorsement, which are the prerequisites to enter the 40-hour SBDI training. Candidates who already carry the SBDI cert are ready to deliver training on Day 1;
candidates who meet the prerequisites can be certified through a Master Instructor-led 40-hour program before the launch cohort begins. - Annual renewal compliance required — SBDI certification must be maintained through attendance at the NYSED Commissioner‑approved Professional Development Seminar (PDS) each year. Candidates should confirm their PDS attendance is current; lapsed SBDIs cannot legally deliver the NY Basic Course or physical performance tests until they complete the PDS.
