Bus Assistant – Indian River, NY
Assist the bus driver with the safe and reliable transportation of students. Responsibilities include helping students load and unload the bus, managing seating and restraints, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting the driver during emergencies.
Responsibilities- Assist students with entering or exiting the bus in a safe manner.
- Use seat belts, car seats, wheel‑chair restraints, and other safety devices as needed.
- Serve as a role model by demonstrating a positive attitude, good moral character, and integrity.
- Monitor passengers at all times to ensure safety regulations and student conduct rules are followed.
- Exercise student management through communication and discipline according to company policy.
- Document and report any violations or conduct concerns to the appropriate authority.
- Physically assist passengers in evacuating the vehicle in case of emergency.
- Ensure that children take their belongings with them when leaving the bus.
- Assist the driver in keeping the interior of the vehicle clean and presentable.
- Complete all required paperwork and submit it in a timely manner.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
- Report to duty on time and perform all responsibilities in a safe manner.
- Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in‑service sessions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Starting pay: $18.72/hr weekly pay. PTO/sick time accrual.
Requirements- Must be at least 18 years of age (19 years for New York School Bus Assistants per state law).
- Must meet physical and medical requirements.
- Must satisfactorily complete and pass all training, and attend safety and in‑service meetings to remain qualified.
- High attention to detail and dexterity to safely use various restraints and secure wheelchairs.
- Ability to relate to and work well with children.
- Ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management.
- Professionalism and diplomatic skills to interact with students, colleagues, parents, and school district personnel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lift and assist students when necessary.
