Location: New York

Bus Assistant – Indian River, NY

Assist the bus driver with the safe and reliable transportation of students. Responsibilities include helping students load and unload the bus, managing seating and restraints, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting the driver during emergencies.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students with entering or exiting the bus in a safe manner.
  • Use seat belts, car seats, wheel‑chair restraints, and other safety devices as needed.
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating a positive attitude, good moral character, and integrity.
  • Monitor passengers at all times to ensure safety regulations and student conduct rules are followed.
  • Exercise student management through communication and discipline according to company policy.
  • Document and report any violations or conduct concerns to the appropriate authority.
  • Physically assist passengers in evacuating the vehicle in case of emergency.
  • Ensure that children take their belongings with them when leaving the bus.
  • Assist the driver in keeping the interior of the vehicle clean and presentable.
  • Complete all required paperwork and submit it in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
  • Report to duty on time and perform all responsibilities in a safe manner.
  • Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in‑service sessions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Pay & Benefits

Starting pay: $18.72/hr weekly pay. PTO/sick time accrual.

Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age (19 years for New York School Bus Assistants per state law).
  • Must meet physical and medical requirements.
  • Must satisfactorily complete and pass all training, and attend safety and in‑service meetings to remain qualified.
  • High attention to detail and dexterity to safely use various restraints and secure wheelchairs.
  • Ability to relate to and work well with children.
  • Ability to maintain effective pupil behavior management.
  • Professionalism and diplomatic skills to interact with students, colleagues, parents, and school district personnel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift and assist students when necessary.
