Pay Range: $48,855.00/yr – $58,743.00/yr
Responsibilities- Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions.
- Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort, exposed to all weather conditions.
- Operate plows during winter operations.
- Obtain required equipment certifications.
- Serve in the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test, and possess a Class D Driver License.
- Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Must be 18 years old, pass physical/medical examination and drug test, possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment. Failure to pass will result in termination.
- Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT‑specified endorsements, and two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, plus heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front‑end loader.
Within the first two weeks of employment, applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification or employment will be terminated. - All Candidates: Must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test before employment starts. Candidates with a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate may be eligible to bypass the pre‑employment physical.
The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 is $48,855, comprised of a base salary of $39,855 plus a $9,000 geographic pay differential. The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 is $51,058, comprised of a base of $42,058 plus a $9,000 differential. The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 is $53,430, comprised of a base of $44,430 plus a $9,000 differential.
