School Bus Dispatcher Liverpool Central School District is seeking an organized and proactive School Bus Dispatcher to support the School Transportation Director in coordinating daily fleet operations. You will serve as a central point of communication, ensuring all bus runs are covered, drivers are supported, and student transportation remains safe and on schedule. This role balances logistical planning with personnel supervision and community relations.
This is a Competitive Civil Service title.
Candidates must currently hold the title of School Bus Dispatcher. Or, candidates must meet the minimum Onondaga County Civil Service qualifications:
Three (3) years of full-time experience or its part‑time equivalent in school transportation or a related field such as commercial bus or truck transportation, either as a driver or having responsibility for scheduling and/or routing drivers. CDL with a PS endorsement is required.
- Daily Dispatching:
Schedule all bus runs, secure substitute drivers as needed, and ensure every bus is dispatched on time. - Routing & Logistics:
Assist in managing bus routes and stops; address complaints and integrate new students into the district’s transportation plan. - Personnel Management:
Supervise a substantial team of drivers, review and submit payroll time cards, and assist in the orientation and training of new hires. - Safety & Compliance:
Periodically check buses for safety law compliance and reevaluate the driving habits of veteran drivers to maintain high standards. - Communication:
Act as a liaison between parents, principals, and drivers to resolve behavior issues and ensure harmonious working relationships. - Emergency Support:
Ability to drive a school bus when necessary to ensure students are transported safely.
- Experience:
Three (3) years of full-time experience in school transportation or a related field (commercial bus/trucking), either as a driver or in a scheduling/routing capacity. - Skills:
Strong knowledge of NYS Motor Vehicle Laws and State Education Department rules. - Skills:
Proficiency in computer systems (email, word processing, and routing software). - Skills:
Excellent communication skills and the ability to supervise a large team effectively. - Special Requirement:
Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (P and S) to operate school buses.
