Class B Straight Truck City Driver – Job Summary
Old Dominion Freight Line is looking for a hardworking and reliable individual to join as a Class B Straight Truck City Driver. The role involves operating straight trucks between company service centers and customer facilities, loading and unloading freight, and ensuring timely, safe delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations covering safe driving, hours of service, inspections, maintenance, and hazardous materials transportation.
- Meet or exceed U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards and pass drug and alcohol tests.
- Load and unload freight using motorized forklift, pallet jack or manually, following state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Utilize loading techniques, including tight or cross loading, and secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, rope, etc.
- Use the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations and interpret shipping labels.
- Complete freight movement forms such as shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, and exception forms.
- Ensure quality loading of all trailers and perform pre‑trip inspections.
- Maintain frequent communication with service center personnel and stay available for customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsements;
Hazmat preferred. - 12 months of straight truck driving experience or graduate of a State‑certified driving school.
- Ability to operate handheld tablet, communicate orally, and follow two‑way radio or phone instructions.
- Knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems, DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspections, and hazardous materials.
- Medical standards compliance, drug and alcohol test pass.
- At least 21 years of age.
The role requires the ability to sit for up to 11 hours, stand and walk on various surfaces, bend, stoop, kneel, squat frequently, lift and carry freight up to 100lb, and load/unload trailers weighing up to 50,000lb. It also requires use of both hands for tasks such as wrapping shrink‑wrap, operating pallet jacks, and operating the truck controls.
Work EnvironmentFrequent exposure to working inside enclosed vehicles, handling heavy freight, variable weather conditions, and noise levels ranging from quiet to loud.
Work ScheduleMonday–Friday; AM/PM shift schedules are estimates and may change.
Compensation$20.15 – $38.95 per hour (based on location, experience, and market conditions).
