Food Rescue Truck Driver

Sharing Excess
• Full-Time, Hourly ($26.00/hour)
• Hunts Point, NY

About Sharing Excess

Sharing Excess is one of the fastest-growing food rescue organizations in America, built on a simple but powerful mission: save food and feed communities. What started as a grassroots movement now operates across the country, distributing 3 million pounds of food every week (100 million pounds annually) to thousands of community partners nationwide.

Our work is visionary, impactful, and deeply human. We move quickly, think creatively, and operate like a high-growth startup — with the heart of a grassroots movement. From building custom technology to rethinking the food supply chain, we're actively reshaping how food reaches communities.

Role Highlight

As a Food Rescue Truck Driver, you'll safely operate a box truck to pick up donated food from wholesalers and other food businesses and deliver it to community partners across the city. The role includes loading and unloading product, following food safety protocols, completing delivery documentation, and using our tools to weigh, categorize, and record every donation.

It's an ideal role for someone who is dependable, safety-minded, and comfortable with physical, hands-on work — someone who takes food safety seriously and shows up as a consistent, professional presence for both the donors and the community partners who rely on our deliveries.

Responsibilities
  • Operate a box truck safely and professionally, maintaining compliance with DOT regulations and company policy.
  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report any vehicle, safety, or maintenance concerns.
  • Arrive at pickup locations on time, following the route assigned by Sharing Excess coordinators.
  • Load, secure, and transport food donations safely, using dollies, hand trucks, and other basic moving equipment as needed.
  • Unload product at partner organizations and coordinate drop-off with the on-site point of contact.
  • Weigh, categorize, and record each donation using provided scales and the Sharing Excess app.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the truck and storage areas.
  • Use sound judgment to identify and elevate any food quality or safety concerns.
You'll Have
  • A valid driver's license without restrictions and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout a shift.
  • Access to a smartphone for real-time use of our delivery app.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and excellent customer service with our donors and community partners.
  • Solid time management, reliable attendance, and the ability to follow food safety and preservation protocols.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Interest in nonprofit or social impact work is strongly preferred, but not required.
You'll Be Successful If
  • You show up on time and take pride in being a reliable, consistent presence for our donors and partners.
  • You handle a box truck, equipment, and food donations with care and attention to detail.
  • You communicate clearly and build good rapport with the people you meet on your route.
  • You stay organized and keep accurate records through the app.
  • You care about reducing food waste and about the communities we serve.
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Primarily driving-based work in a box truck, with regular loading and unloading of product.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout a shift.
  • Monday to Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm, with occasional flexibility required for early mornings or evenings as needed.
Compensation & Benefits

$26.00/hour (full-time, hourly)

  • Ten (10) days (80 hours) of paid time off annually, available after 90 days of employment.
  • Company-paid holidays.
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage beginning after 90 days of employment – Sharing Excess covers 100% of the employee-only premium on our base medical plan.
  • 401(k) plan, subject to plan terms.
