The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Driver & Trucking Hand to join its Performance Operations – Scenic Department Staff.
The Scenic Department is responsible for the creation, alteration, and sourcing of all scenery for productions in the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama.
The Overhire Driver & Trucking Hand is delegated as needed to work on storage pulls, and/or shopping runs. The Overhire Lead Driver reports to the Production Shops Manager.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Scenic department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
Core Capabilities, Primary Duties, and Responsibilities- Operate truck for storage pulls and/or shopping runs or serve as a passenger in the truck to assist with loading and unloading
- Maintain a clean, usable area at the storage unit
- Ensure buildings and rental equipment are well maintained during shifts
- Use safe moving practices to prevent injury when lifting and moving items
Additional duties as assigned - Track receipts as necessary
- Comfort driving a box truck in Manhattan
- Ability to lift 50 lbs comfortably
- State‑issued Driver's License, if driving
- Knowledge of NYC driving regulations regarding commercial vehicles and parking
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with other crew members collaboratively
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement. Work calls may include shifts scheduled for early in the morning and on weekends as needed, and may require flexibility to coordinate short‑term calls.
Salary Range$27.00/hour
