Social Care Network Lead/Warehouse Worker

Our network of 120 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Warehouse Worker will assist Met Council’s food warehouse in its food banking operation. Responsibilities include handling incoming deliveries, pick-ups, creating orders, moving products, unloading vehicles, loading vehicles, assisting drivers on deliveries, and cleaning the warehouse.

Specific to this role, the Warehouse Worker will act as the floor lead for Met Council’s Social Care Network Fresh and Nonperishable Pantry program. This position will report to the Special Project Coordinator on all aspects of this role related to the Social Care Network.

Hours will be split between general Warehouse responsibilities and Social Care Network responsibilities as needed.

Social Care Network:

  • Act as floor lead for Social Care Network pantry box packing.
  • Accept incoming orders and be responsible for breaking them down and counting product to ensure quality and quantity
  • Repalletize incoming orders and existing Social Care Network floor inventory following Special Projects Coordinator’s instruction; conduct inventory checks of Social Care Network dry goods as needed.
  • Maintain inventory list on all Social Care Network packing supplies (tape, boxes, etc.) and let Special Projects Coordinator know when running low
  • Act as floor lead for weekly Social Care Network packing day: i.e. receive weekly packing list from SPC and guide team in pulling items, ensure pantry boxes are packed neatly and accurately, confirm correct quantity of boxes are packed, palletized, and placed in cold storage, provide SPC with inventory on leftover produce.

General Warehouse:

  • Load and unload trucks and vans as needed.
  • Use a tablet or smartphone to document case counts and communicate with team members.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean warehouse including sweeping and organizing stock.
  • Assist manager in all operations of the warehouse as needed.
  • Operate forklift and other machinery.
  • Assemble and disassemble pallets of food.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.
  • Strong attention to detail including providing accurate product counts and identifying discrepancies
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and on a team
  • Significant organizational skills, with an ability to stay focused on assigned tasks in a fast‑paced environment
  • Can‑do, hands‑on approach to getting the work done

Skills and

Education:

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in a warehouse environment
  • Ability to operate warehouse equipment including electric jacks and forklift
  • Comfortable using an iPad/tablet and smartphone for data entry, inventory management, and communication, or willing to learn.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy items (up to 60‑pound sacks) on a regular basis
  • Ability to read/write/speak English

Physical Demands:

1.
Required Constantly: Walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, computer input, finger dexterity and coordination of hand, eye and foot

2.
Required Frequently: Standing and climbing stairs; carrying laptop & files (approx. 8‑10 lbs)

3.
Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting 5‑25 pounds, pushing and pulling

Special Requirements:

  • Requires extended periods of standing, walking, and performing manual labor both indoors and outdoors, including inclement weather.
  • Steel‑toe work boots must be worn at all times while in the warehouse. Clothing should be appropriate for professional setting and public interactions, avoiding any profanity, political statements or offensive branding.

Compensation: $20 per hour
