Manual Machinist in Newark

The Manual Machinist sets up and operates a variety of manual machining equipment to produce precision parts according to detailed specifications. This role requires strong blueprint reading skills, a solid understanding of machining processes, and the ability to maintain tight tolerances while working efficiently in a fast-paced shop environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a variety of manual machines, including mills, lathes, saws, shears, and grinders.
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions accurately to produce parts to specification.
  • Follow router sequences and perform secondary operations as required to complete parts.
  • Fabricate parts to precise specifications while maintaining required tolerances and quality standards.
  • Perform in-process inspections using measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers to verify dimensions.
  • Check and verify critical dimensions throughout the machining process to ensure accuracy.
  • Deburr and finish parts after machining to meet quality and cosmetic requirements.
  • Set up and operate saws and shears for material preparation and cutting.
  • Maintain consistent production flow while meeting quality, delivery, and efficiency expectations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, managing setups and machining tasks from start to finish.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and adjust processes, tooling, or setups to resolve problems.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of overall fabrication and machining operations.

Essential Skills

  • 5–10 years of experience in manual machining or a closely related field.
  • Proven ability to set up and operate manual mills, lathes, saws, shears, grinders, and other manual machines.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions.
  • Solid understanding of machining processes, fabrication methods, and machine capabilities.
  • Proficiency in basic math and shop calculations, including trigonometry and machinist calculations.
  • Knowledge of bolt hole patterns and use of machinist handbook references.
  • Ability to perform setups with minimal assistance and run parts to tight tolerances.
  • Experience performing in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain tight tolerances and consistently meet quality standards.
  • Mechanical aptitude with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality.
  • Strong organizational skills and commitment to maintaining a clean and orderly workspace.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to support others in a fabrication and machining environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a CNC machinist or CNC operator is beneficial.
  • Experience in operating both manual and CNC mills and lathes.
  • Hands-on experience with deburring, finishing, and secondary operations in a machine shop.
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes in a manufacturing or fabrication department environment.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced operation with heavy machinery and moderate noise levels.
  • Self-motivated approach with a strong sense of ownership over work quality and output.

Work Environment

This role is based in a third-party contract manufacturing facility that supports multiple industries, including semiconductor, electronics, automation, life sciences, and medical device sectors. You will work in the Fabrication Department, which operates as a welding environment but maintains a relatively clean shop. The team includes several machinists and welders working across two shifts, fostering collaboration and shared expertise. While performing your duties, you may be exposed to current weather conditions because the facility gate is often kept open.

The environment includes moderate noise levels, heavy machinery and equipment, and a fast-paced production setting. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Pay and Benefits
