Overview
Are you ready for the next step in your career? An opportunity is now open for the City of Newark's Equipment Mechanic I/II position.
The City of Newark is seeking a knowledgeable Equipment Mechanic I/II with hands-on automotive experience to join our Public Works Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City vehicles and equipment; ability to repair gasoline, diesel powered, or alternative fuel powered automotives; organization and log of tasks done and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.
Experienceand Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equipment Mechanic I
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and six (6) months of general automotive or equipment maintenance and repair experience.
- Equipment Mechanic II
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented with specialized training in automotive and heavy construction equipment maintenance and repair, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing automotive and general equipment maintenance work similar to that of an Equipment Mechanic I with the City of Newark.
- Equipment Mechanic I
- Possession of a valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
- Equipment Mechanic II
- Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license (with tank endorsement when applicable) within one year of appointment. Positions performing safety sensitive functions are subject to the Federal Highway Administration Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) regulations and the City s Administrative Regulation concerning drug and alcohol testing as a continuing condition of employment with the City.
- Possession of a valid California M1 (motorcycle operator’s license) within one year of appointment.
- Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are desirable.

Ideal CandidateWe are looking for a highly skilled Equipment Mechanic with heavy construction equipment maintenance and repair experience. Possession of ASE certifications is desirable. To be successful in this position, the ability to work with both team members or independently is an asset along with being detail-oriented, flexible and being familiar with the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment and vehicles.
