Job SummaryThe Vehicle Test Driver is responsible for driving and evaluating new and prototype motor vehicles on pre‑defined routes on primary and secondary roads in various weather conditions. Drivers may also transport customer employees throughout the Bay Area during testing.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Drive vehicles for up to 10 hours per shift with regular breaks.
- Operate test vehicles equipped for typical drivers.
- Work independently or in small groups without direct supervision.
- Write legible comments on documents.
- Maintain security and safety of assigned test vehicles, including locking vehicles when not occupied.
- Complete vehicle pre‑inspections before leaving facility.
- Follow predetermined assigned routes and cover all test procedures, duty cycles, and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering staff and customers regarding vehicle and system issues.
- Adhere to all rules, policies, and procedures for test vehicles (no eating, drinking—except bottled water— or smoking in vehicles).
- Follow high‑security vehicle protocols.
- No cell phones or texting while driving.
- Arrive on time to all scheduled duties.
- Document clear and concise observations of vehicle performance, function, and comfort.
- Train trainees as needed.
- Maintain a positive attitude with team members and customers.
- Refuel, recharge, and clean the vehicle.
- Report road incidents to the Lead Drive/Project Coordinator.
- Keep activity logs and record hours worked.
- Be flexible to support customers on weekends and holidays.
- Move heavy objects and work in hazardous environments when required.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑drive inspections (tire pressure, battery levels, basic diagnostics, cleanliness).
- Adapt to changes in test plans, routes, or conditions, including weather or road restrictions.
- Record test results, incidents, or malfunctions and report immediately to the Lead.
- Provide feedback on vehicle performance, ride quality, handling, and other relevant parameters.
- Communicate concerns or deviations from expected performance to the testing team in real‑time.
- Coordinate with engineering, safety, and quality assurance teams as necessary.
- Adapt to last‑minute requests or additional test scenarios from management.
- Operate safely in daylight, darkness, and poor road conditions.
- Class C Driver’s License.
- Clean driving record.
- Pass criminal background check and drug screen.
- Minimum 3 years of professional driving experience.
- Ability to work assigned schedules, which may include multiple shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer skills (SAP, MS Office, MRS systems).
- Team‑oriented, flexible, and focused on maintaining high customer service levels.
- Enthusiasm for operating vehicles.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work in varied conditions, including active service centers and unpredictable weather.
- Physical exertion ability: sit for two or more hours, stand for eight or more hours, walk, bend, kneel, lay, twist, reach, stretch, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of hands for grasping tools, entering data, writing communications, or calling customers or internal partners.
- Ability to see, read, and interpret documents such as governmental regulations, safety rules, operating instructions, and schematics.
