Overview
Lead Driver role in the Operations department.
Location:
Newark, CA. The Lead Driver is responsible for driving and evaluating new and prototype motor vehicles on pre-defined routes on primary and secondary roads in various weather conditions. The role may include transporting employees of the company within the Bay Area during tests.
- Thorough knowledge of local motor vehicle and traffic laws.
- Drive vehicles with both automatic and manual transmissions.
- Sit and drive for up to 10 hours per shift (when needed) with regular breaks.
- Operate test vehicles as equipped for typical drivers.
- Work independently or in small groups for periods without direct supervision.
- Write legibly all comments needed on documents.
- Maintain security and safety of assigned test vehicles; lock all vehicles when not occupied.
- Complete all vehicle pre-inspections prior to leaving the facility.
- Follow predetermined assigned routes and complete test procedures and duty cycles with complete reports and findings.
- Work cooperatively with engineering staff and customers on vehicle and system issues when requested.
- Follow all rules, policies and procedures pertaining to test vehicles (no eating, drinking except bottled water, or smoking in vehicles).
- Follow rules and procedures pertaining to high-security vehicles; no cell phones or texting while driving.
- Arrive to work on time and provide clear, concise comments about vehicle performance, function, and comfort.
- Maintain a positive attitude with team members and customers.
- Refuel/recharge and clean vehicles; report road incidents to the Lead Driver/Project Coordinator.
- Keep an activities log and log hours.
- Ability to support a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
- Move heavy objects and work in potentially hazardous environments as required.
- Route and Vehicle Assignment: assign routes and vehicles to drivers at the start of each shift; monitor vehicle status and out-of-service vehicles.
- Driver Training: provide training on testing programs and conduct refresher training as needed.
- Daily Reporting: complete the daily lead report, including driver attendance and task completion updates; ensure timely submissions.
- Data Quality Management: oversee drivers’ Power Apps entries; verify mileage logs for each test vehicle.
- IT Support: assist drivers with IT issues and ensure drivers have necessary tools.
- Problem Solving: act as first point of contact for issues during shifts; escalate unresolved problems when needed.
- Support Tasks: assist with maintenance coordination, compliance checks, and data entry; liaise between drivers and project management.
- Test Drive: perform test drives as needed, following same protocols as regular drivers while balancing lead duties.
- Exposure to inclement weather conditions may occur.
- Ability to drive safely in daylight, darkness, and poor road conditions.
- Must have a Class C Driver’s License.
- Pass a criminal background check and drug screen; clean driving record.
- Willingness to work a schedule that may include multiple shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Minimum 3 years of professional driving experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; computer skills (SAP, MS Office, MRS systems).
- Team-oriented, flexible, and focused on customer service.
- Enthusiasm for operating; strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
- Pass criminal background check, DMV history, and pre-employment drug screening.
- Willingness to work in various conditions including active service centers or unpredictable weather.
- Physical exertion may be required (sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs.).
- Frequent use of hands for grasping, data entry, writing, and communication.
- Ability to see, read, and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions.
