Day in the Life of a Commercial Project ManagerYou are responsible for ensuring projects stay under the estimator's budget while leading the project team to exceed client expectations. You act as liaison between the general contractor, general manager, and superintendents, tracking progress and updating stakeholders.
You perform cost estimates, prepare proposals, negotiate final settlement prices, and bill for work performed. Prior to projects, you evaluate scope, complete the estimate at completion (EAC) for senior leadership approval, order materials timely, run reports to monitor timelines and profitability, manage risks, and establish recovery plans when needed.
With a focus on quality control, you oversee construction for compliance with specifications, codes, and installation techniques. You set a culture of teamwork, communication, structure, and client satisfaction, ensuring jobs are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in construction, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, or architecture, or an associate degree with equivalent work‑related experience
- 5 years of direct project management experience in the construction industry – HVAC or plumbing preferred
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, including design, architecture, interoperability, operation, controllers, networking, and communication methodology (including Fiber Optics)
- Proficiency in project management software such as Procore, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and Spitfire
- Familiarity with financial accounting systems
- Proficiency with MS Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Writer, and Visio
- Valid driver’s license
Project management professional (PMP), construction quality control (USACE CQM‑C), and OSHA 30 certifications are preferred, but multiple factors will be considered.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to convey technical information to non‑technical audiences, and a tenacious drive to get tasks completed on time and within budget are essential.
