Director of Safety
The Director of Safety leads and oversees all environmental, health, and safety initiatives across construction operations, with a focus on electrical construction. This role builds and executes a best-in-class safety program, ensures regulatory compliance, and drives a proactive safety culture across multiple job sites. The Director of Safety holds executive-level ownership of safety strategy and culture, has high visibility with leadership and external stakeholders, and plays a key role in reducing incidents and improving operational performance.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a company-wide safety strategy and comprehensive safety programs for construction operations.
- Lead safety planning for construction projects during preconstruction and throughout project execution.
- Conduct regular job site audits, inspections, and compliance reviews to ensure adherence to OSHA and other regulatory standards.
- Analyze incident data, trends, and root causes, and implement preventative measures and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Review, approve, and monitor project-specific safety plans and ensure subcontractor compliance with safety requirements.
- Serve as the primary company representative to OSHA and other external regulatory and safety agencies.
- Oversee the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of safety training programs for field and office personnel.
- Lead safety committee initiatives and company-wide safety awareness campaigns to strengthen safety culture.
- Manage, mentor, and develop Safety Specialists and field safety personnel, including influencing hiring, training, and leadership development of safety teams.
- Ensure effective incident reporting, investigation, and documentation processes are in place and consistently followed.
- Collaborate with project management, preconstruction, and field teams to integrate safety into planning, scheduling, and execution.
- Identify hazards and risks on active construction sites and implement effective corrective and preventive practices.
- Develop, implement, and maintain job safety analyses (JSA) and other risk mitigation tools for critical tasks.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory standards related to construction safety and environmental health and safety (EHS).
- Promote workforce engagement in safety initiatives and encourage open communication regarding hazards and near-misses.
- Coordinate safety program development and standardization across multiple projects in the Tri-State area.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety protocols, procedures, and training, and recommend improvements.
- Support project teams and general contractor partners in preconstruction and project coordination activities related to safety.
- Maintain readiness and responsiveness for field visits, including frequent travel to active job sites across PA, NJ, and DE.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Safety Management, Construction, or a related field, or significant relevant experience in place of a degree.
- At least 8 years of experience in safety management, with a minimum of 5 years in a supervisory and leadership role overseeing a highly structured safety program.
- Thorough technical knowledge of construction-related OSHA standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to recognize hazardous situations on construction sites and implement effective corrective and preventive practices.
- Extensive knowledge of safety protocols, procedures, and best practices in construction safety.
- Demonstrated experience in safety program development, implementation, and continuous improvement.
- Strong experience in OSHA compliance and regulatory expertise.
- Hands-on experience with incident investigation, incident reporting, and root cause analysis.
- Proficiency in hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk mitigation strategies in construction environments.
- Experience leading safety training programs for field and office personnel.
- Knowledge of construction management processes, general contractor operations, and preconstruction and project coordination activities.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel daily across the Tri-State region (PA, NJ, DE).
- Ability to manage and mentor safety professionals and field safety personnel.
- Strong communication and leadership skills to influence safety culture across all levels of the organization.
- OSHA 30 certification (required).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification (preferred).
- OSHA 500 certification (preferred).
- Working knowledge of electrical construction and standards for electrical safety in the workplace, including NFPA 70E (preferred).
- First Aid and CPR certification (preferred).
- Experience working with electrical contractors or on electrical construction projects.
