Summary Statement
- An incumbent is responsible for assisting in the management, direction and oversight of the Child Development Center (CDC). Work includes developing and implementing the program's goals and objectives, ensuring compliance with early childhood regulations (state and federal), supporting staff, maintaining high-quality early childhood education and care, assisting with administration and operational functions, engaging families and the community, and serving as a leader for the Center's continuous improvement.
Nature and Scope
- An incumbent typically reports to the director of the child development center and provides support in implementing program goals and objectives. The assistant director assists in supervising staff, supporting family engagement, ensuring program compliance with Delaware Office of Child Care Licensing (OCCL) and State Funded Early Care and Education Program (SFECEP) standards, and coordinating curriculum and classroom operations. Work includes frequent interaction with children, families, College staff, and external partners in the community.
This position models appropriate interactions for Early Childhood Education practicum students, maintains professional communications, and supports the mission of the College's Child Development Center.
Principal Accountabilities
- An incumbent may perform any combination of the below listed accountabilities:
- Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating program content, daily operations, and polices to ensure the achievement of the Center's objectives and alignment with the College's mission.
- Supports recruitment, enrollment, and orientation of families and children in the program, ensuring eligibility and OCCL child file requirements are met.
- Assists with the hiring, training, scheduling, supervising and evaluating of all classroom operations, including oversight of lead teachers, assistants, and student workers.
- Provides guidance and mentoring to classroom teachers and assistants on curriculum implementation, child assessment, and classroom management.
- Monitors, tracks, and ensures all classroom environments, lesson plans, and activities are developmentally appropriate and meet the requirements of the Office of the Child Care Licensing assessment practices, curriculum program initiatives, and the individual needs of the children in all classrooms.
- Ensures timely completion and compliance of all required assessments, screenings, and conferences. Oversees accurate data submission, developmentally appropriate lesson planning, and supports identification of developmental delays and referrals as needed.
- Conducts observations in all classrooms to ensure lesson plans are being followed and presented appropriately, assess interactions between teachers and children, and ensures all the Office of the Child Care Licensing (OCCL) and State Funded Early Care and Education Program (SFECEP) requirements are being met.
- Monitors, facilitates, and reviews Early Childhood Education Methods and Practicum students with their laboratory experiences including presentation of student lesson plans.
- Collaborates with the Center Director on grant – related data collection, State Funded Early Care and Education Program (SFECEP) standards, and preparation of state and federal reports.
- Assists in developing and maintaining effective communication with families, including parent conferences, newsletters, family events, outreach partnerships with community agencies, college departments, and external early childhood organizations.
