Qnity is seeking a Senior Automated Process Equipment Mechanical Design Engineer for the Kalrez business. The selected candidate will lead design development for automated process equipment for regional manufacturing sites and collaborate with our partner site in China to finalize designs and support fabrication, testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate will have detailed expertise in designing and commissioning automated equipment for discrete processes, with a concentration in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation.

Design and development needs will range from improvements to existing manufacturing equipment to the development of new, custom-designed equipment. Lean automation techniques will be utilized to optimize layouts through value stream maps (VSMs) and process simulation. The engineer will be responsible for developing and vetting concepts, proof-of-principle designs, prototypes, and commercial-scale equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop first-of-a-kind custom equipment including conceptualizing new processes and equipment based on business requirements.
  • Design components and machines in a modular way that can be used in subsequent machines and easily replaceable components.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, safety, and engineering to design improvements to existing equipment.
  • Provide expertise in mechanical layout to support projects at the sites.
  • Provide expertise in 3D modeling, product data management (PDM), and simulation.
  • Collaborate with site stakeholders to understand challenges and deliver automated solutions with minimal impact on production and intrusiveness to change protocols.
  • Collaborate with internal and external suppliers to design, fabricate, and qualify equipment.
  • Support the following as a technical expert:
    • Business- and site-level Technology Roadmaps
    • Automation Assessments
    • Capital projects including Statements of Work (SOW), design reviews, construction, acceptance tests, commissioning, and safety reviews
    • Site Automation Evaluations/Improvements
  • Collaborate on multiple projects concurrently as a technical expert.
  • Support the EHS organization with investigations and action items.
  • Collaborate on the Qnity S1M machine safety standard and address machine safety risks via machine risk assessments (MRAs) during design and execution.
  • Develop equipment standards to support equipment from a leveraged engineering perspective and deploy technology organization-wide.
  • Provide technical expertise for Management of Change, including acting as technical reviewer of site MOC processes.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in a discrete manufacturing environment focused on detailed mechanical design and maintenance of automated equipment (preferred).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with coursework concentration involving machine design and process simulation.
  • Able to travel to partner site in China (average 10% of time).
  • High proficiency with CAD/CAM software including Solid Works and AutoCAD.
  • Experience deploying and standardizing a product data management (PDM) system for a robotic integrator or manufacturing site.
  • Preferred:
    Experience with robotic simulation environments including ABB Robot Studio and KUKA.Sim.
  • Preferred:
    Experience importing models and documentation to Nvidia Omniverse.
