We are seeking an R&D Engineer – Flammability to join our growing Thermal and Specialized Solutions (TSS) team. The position reports directly to the Core Services Manager at our R&D Discovery Hub in Newark, DE.
Responsibilities- Provide R&D laboratory support for the development of improved next‑generation fluorochemical processes and products.
- Conduct a variety of tests to understand the flammability properties of neat refrigerants and blends, foam expansion agents, specialty fluids, and other materials. These tests include both standardized and novel tests under simulated process and application conditions.
- Interface with colleagues in TSS R&D and Technical Service to set objectives and priorities for the tests; provide data to guide research programs, support patent applications, and address technical questions from external customers.
- Plan and conduct experiments independently, collect necessary data, organize and record results, share conclusions broadly, and continue experiments as needed with minimal guidance from supervision.
- Ensure laboratory measurement systems are in good working condition and upgrade them as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Materials Science engineering or a similar field.
- Strong fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer.
- Strong mechanical ability to set up, maintain, fix, and troubleshoot lab equipment.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well with all levels of the organization.
- Self‑motivated, customer‑focused, and able to achieve results independently.
- Ability to work in teams and collaborate effectively.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving, troubleshooting, and data analysis skills.
- Demonstrated multitasking and planning/organizing skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Two or more years of post‑degree experience in a manufacturing facility, R&D, or analytical testing lab.
- Experience in combustion testing, fire safety, or related areas in HVAC&R, chemical, or automotive industries.
- Experience with handling gaseous reagents and highly hazardous materials such as HF and HCl.
- Familiarity with UL, ASHRAE, ASTM, and ISO flammability classification methods.
- Familiarity with design of experiments and other statistical techniques.
