About the Company

Our Fortune 200 utility client is leading energy transformation and calling for problem solvers, innovators, community builders, and change makers. Work with us to deliver solutions that make diverse cities and communities stronger, healthier, and more resilient. We are a major utility company with thousands of colleagues strong serving millions of customers across multiple energy companies and distribution regions.

Primary Purpose

This Engineer role sits on the substation engineering team that manages large, complex projects — greenfield substation builds, full substation rebuilds, and multi-outage work. This team's focus is distinct from the line-of-business programmatic engineering groups. The role covers substation design work spanning protection & control (P&C) and physical design, from initial walkdown through construction support. Work can include:

  • Updating P&C schemes/wiring and physical design drawings (elevation, arrangement, conduit and trough) to remove/install equipment per scope of work
  • Leading walkdowns with other departments to scope work and carrying the design through to completion
  • Supporting bid events — working with consultants, reviewing drawings, and providing comments
  • Coordinating material requests, project schedules, material procurement, and construction support
  • Ramping from programmatic work (1-for-1 equipment replacements) into complex substation rebuilds and new substation builds
  • Extended hours are rare. Coverage for equipment failures is handled through a rotating, volunteer-based on-call list; contractors are not required to support storm duty.
Primary Duties and Accountabilities

-Responsibility %

  • 50% Performs substation engineering assignments of moderate to complex scope — greenfield builds, rebuilds, and multi-outage projects — exercising independent judgment under the guidance of experienced engineers (e.g., update P&C and physical design drawings, collect and analyze technical data, and present recommendations to management)
  • 30% Leads small to moderate substation engineering projects or tasks, leading walkdowns and coordinating with cross-functional departments to ensure technical requirements and standards are met
  • 10% Provides technical support during bid events — reviewing consultant drawings and providing comments — and assists with material requests, schedule coordination, and construction support
  • 10% Participates in the evaluation and improvement of technical systems and processes;
Senior Engineers are expected to lead and mentor junior engineers, while General Engineers are expected to work independently, with team support available
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering required — no amount of professional experience substitutes for this requirement
  • Electrical engineering preferred; other engineering disciplines will be considered when substation experience is present
  • 4–7 years of professional engineering experience for General Engineer; 7+ years for Senior Engineer
  • PE license or master's degree reduces the requirement by one year)
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience directly in substation engineering design
  • Experience with substation protection & control (P&C) — schemes and wiring — and/or physical design (elevation, arrangement, conduit and trough drawings); exposure to both is expected to develop
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and Bluebeam (PDF markup, industry standard)
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems and complex field test equipment; internal design manuals are used for applicable regulations and codes, so no prior regulatory knowledge is required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Engineering (may also reduce the minimum experience requirement by one year, as with a PE license)
  • Working knowledge of Micro Station
  • Constitution support or project management experience
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with all management levels
  • Strong written and oral communication/presentation skills and technical writing skills
  • Familiarity with additional analysis software (e.g., CYMDIST, PSS/E) is a plus — comprehension is sufficient, hands-on use is not required
