Job Description: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Corporate State Income Tax professional to join our dynamic tax team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for state & local income tax compliance, planning and audits. This role will also be expected to provide support to other areas such as Tax Reporting and the related Accounting for Income Taxes (ASC 740).
This role requires a deep understanding of state tax laws and regulations, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various departments. The successful individual is very hands‑on and is able to provide technical review, as well as prepare the returns if necessary. This position offers an excellent opportunity for leadership and career development for the tax professional.
Income Tax Compliance
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of multi‑state consolidated, unitary and separate income tax returns.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of extensions and estimated payments.
- Prepare supporting documentation and work papers for relevant tax returns.
- Work with other members of the tax department to coordinate completion of all required forms.
- Respond to tax notices as necessary.
- Complete return‑to‑provision calculations and analysis for state returns.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness of tax account roll forwards and reconciliations.
- Prepare current and deferred tax provision.
- Prepare rate reconciliation.
- Develop and implement state tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positions.
- Manage state income tax audits, including responding to information requests, negotiating settlements, and minimizing audit adjustments.
- Conduct research on the implications of state tax laws; interpret state regulations; and apply to the Company’s facts.
- Identify opportunities and risks, formulate conclusions, and recommend appropriate course of action.
- Ensure all laws are complied with to minimize tax liability while achieving best tax result.
- Assist in the preparation of state income tax provisions and disclosures for financial statements in accordance with ASC 740.
- Provide training and support to junior staff members.
- Manage staff deliverables in accordance with due dates on tax calendar and overall tax department objectives.
- Review, evaluate, and ensure accuracy of staff work and provide technical feedback.
- Take active ownership for knowledge of software, processes, and workflows, as they relate to the overall State & Local Income Tax functional area.
- Actively seek & design process improvements related to all compliance & tax accounting activities.
- Maximize use of existing tax software throughout provision and compliance process.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA or MST certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in state income tax compliance and planning, preferably in a corporate environment or public accounting firm.
- Solid theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of state and local income tax laws and regulations.
- Ability to analyze, evaluate and quantify the financial impact of state tax issues.
- Strong understanding of US GAAP accounting.
- Strong technology skills, Corptax software experience preferred.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal (written and oral) skills and ability to inform, educate, and influence others to support corporate goals and objectives.
- Must be self‑motivated and willing to learn new skills.
- Must be a team player, working collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks and meet deadlines.
The pay range for this position is $81,800.00 - $. Typically, a competitive wage for new hires will fall between $ to $. Offers for this position may vary based on market data and other factors such as job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The position may also be eligible for a short‑term incentive.
