Context Of The Job

Under the limited direction of the Campus Fire Marshal, the Fire Protection Generalist administers the fire protection/prevention, life safety, and related loss control programs at the University to assure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Work is performed under general direction and employee plans and arranges own tasks; direction is infrequently provided by supervisor. The employee must be able to apply standard policy or procedure to routine problems or duties without benefit of specific guidelines and determine actions to be taken without immediate direction of supervisor in all but unusual cases.

The employee creates new procedures for resolving non-routine matters having a moderate to high potential for generating conflict. Incumbent routinely interacts with students, staff, faculty, unit administrators and regulatory agencies, and functions as an internal consultant to all levels of the University in matters of fire and life safety. The incumbent may supervise daily activities of student interns. Failure to perform tasks satisfactorily can result in liability, property damage, injury or fatality, regulatory noncompliance, and fine, imprisonment or both.

This position is designated Essential Personnel for specific University operations.

Pay Grade: 29E Major Responsibilities
  • Conduct facility inspections for fire safety, general safety, code compliance and hazard identification. Initiate/coordinate corrective actions for hazards and deficiencies identified.
  • Conduct/coordinate inspections of Greek Houses.
  • Performs QA/QC inspections of commercial hood and duct cleaning locations following contractor service.
  • Issue open flame permits and tent permits. Perform inspections for issued permits as needed.
  • Participate in emergency pre-planning for campus buildings through detailed hazard assessment, survey of facility operational processes and storage practices.
  • Conduct fire drills during business hours and after-hours for residence halls and other campus buildings as needed.
  • Provide fire safety and extinguisher training for both general and specialized campus populations.
  • Assist with emergency response training within EHS, and assist as needed with training UD Police, Aetna HHL, and other agencies.
  • Provide fire safety staffing for major sporting events, concerts, and commencement. Assignments may occur outside of typical business hours.
  • Occasionally participate in review of construction project plans and specifications for assigned projects, including, but not limited to, new construction, additions, renovations, and fit-out projects. Assist with progress inspections, hydrostatic sprinkler inspections, UD pre-acceptance and final commissioning for fire protection system projects.
  • Carry the after-hours department on-call phone on a rotating basis and respond to campus emergencies as needed.
  • Serve on safety committees representing EHS as assigned.
  • Perform job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and three years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible job-related experience in fire protection/prevention.
  • Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering preferred.
  • Fire Inspector Certification (National Fire Protection Association) preferred.

    Must have or be able to obtain 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification and DOT Certification.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of fire safety and prevention principles, practices, standards, and resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding of State, Federal, and local fire/safety regulations, and codes.
  • Experience in developing fire safety procedures, inspection practices, and protocols.
  • Experience with occupational safety and loss control preferred.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Intermediate computing skills and experience with database and spreadsheet software.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Special Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be able to pass hazmat physical examination to qualify the individual for emergency response involving all levels of respiratory protection.
