This role is for the respiratory therapist who is licensed, professional, competent, and assumes responsibility and accountability for providing respiratory therapy using a defined process in collaboration with the health care team. Coordinates the activities of the pulmonary rehabilitation patients including direct patient care, exercise and education, six-minute walk tests, oxygen determination, medication education and administration, and other respiratory scope of practice duties.
Shift: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays (no weekends, no holidays).
- Coordinate patient’s enrollment in program.
- Perform medical record review, admission interview, pulmonary and cardiovascular assessment and program orientation.
- Perform and document a clinical assessment of patients while in pulmonary rehab according to established standards.
- Initiate and follow a basic plan of care based on assessment and diagnosis.
- Supervise and provide therapy to patients during exercise sessions, and document care delivery in the medical record.
- Be aware of patient rights and protect the patient/family rights and confidentiality.
- Assess patient/family learning needs and carry out teaching measures on various topics relating to the practice and techniques of pulmonary rehabilitation.
- Communicate with and work on behalf of patients/families in a dignified, respectful manner to ensure effective implementation of the plan of care.
- Assist in the ongoing development of the pulmonary rehabilitation program.
- Participate in development of educational materials appropriate to be taught to patients and family.
- Demonstrate basic delegation skills to other personnel in a manner that optimizes patient care.
- Train, orient, and educate personnel as required.
- Assume an active role to keep informed about changes in policies, procedures and equipment, follow planned educational programs, and be willing to be taught, coached, and/or mentored by others.
- Comply with all departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to assure patient safety and program efficacy.
- Understand and follow universal precautions.
- Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established CCHS and departmental safety practices; report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
- Interact with patients, families, co-workers, management, physicians, and ancillary department staff in a compassionate and humanistic manner, demonstrating empathy, sensitivity, patience, and mutual respect.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Graduate of a CoArC approved School of Respiratory Therapy;
Registered Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of two years of respiratory therapy experience.
Maintain active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. Maintain current BLS certification; ACLS preferred. Current AARC member preferred. Licensure in the state of Delaware required.
