Duration: 12+ Months Contract
Pay Rate: $20.00-$26.00/ Hr on W2
DescriptionWith guidance from supervision and peers, assist technical personnel in general laboratory operations and routine laboratory or information handling tasks in support of scientific research.
Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment in accordance with laboratory standards to help ensure the validity and integrity of experimental results.
Perform tasks according to accepted methods and training prescribed by the work group.
Shift Times7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Any Specific Skills, Requirements, or Experience Desired in a Candidate- BS Sciences (Animal Sciences preferred, or Biology with animal experience).
- Recent graduates with school laboratory experience are acceptable.
- Rat/Mouse handling experience preferred but not required.
- The role will initially start as Lab Support for the Necropsy and Histology group rather than immediately performing those functions.
- Candidates should be aware of and comfortable with this arrangement.
- Candidates must be comfortable with euthanasia and necropsy functions.
- Set up before, provide prosectors with support during, and help clean up after necropsies.
- Provide necropsy and histology lab support including, but not limited to:
- Changing solutions
- Running the slide staining machine and other equipment
- Weighing tissues
- Unpacking and preparing specimens for shipment
- Other related tasks
- Euthanize laboratory animals to help ensure the humane treatment of animals.
- Observe and record data such as weights and physical characteristics of laboratory animals in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Observe and record facility and equipment measurements such as weights and temperatures in accordance with laboratory standards to help ensure the validity and integrity of experimental results.
- Work as a member of a team toward the timely, efficient, accurate, and precise production of histological slides for examination by the pathologist.
- If workload and performance allow, this could include embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping.
- Operate, clean, and maintain facilities and equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Order, receive, decontaminate, and store equipment and other consumables; stock cabinets to help ensure efficiency of laboratory operations.
- Provide general assistance toward laboratory operations such as preparation of reagents and solutions, and disposal of biological and/or chemical waste to help ensure that operations run smoothly and efficiently.
- Adhere to EPA regulations, protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, and Good Laboratory Practices.
- If workload, performance, and interest allow, the position has the potential to evolve into a Necropsy/Histology Technician role.
- This would include performing routine and special rodent necropsies (autopsies) and/or routine and special histology procedures.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.

- Recognize non-routine or unusual circumstances and obtain advice from appropriate personnel.
- Organize, prioritize, and complete assignments to stated specifications.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

- Maintain/obtain computer skills commensurate with Essential Functions, including the ability to learn a validated system.
- General chemistry, biology, and mathematics skills.
- Function independently with minimal supervision and take the initiative to accomplish tasks for the team that need to be completed.
- Must be able to deliver high-quality work product.
- Must be able to operate in a regulatory environment.
- Must be flexible and able to obtain new knowledge and skills that will contribute to overall objectives.
- If the role evolves into a Necropsy/Histology Technician position, must be able to work a minimum of one weekend in an eight-week period.
- If the role remains as a Lab Assistant, weekend work is not required.
- Must be willing to handle laboratory animals.
