Assistant Director of Nursing ADON

Job Overview

We are looking for an experienced and caring Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to join our team. The schedule will be Monday through Friday and on call. The Assistant Director of Nursing is an RN who is responsible for the overall supervision of nursing care in the Health Center.

• Supervises direct nursing care in the Health Center.
• Administers direct nursing care when more than routine care is indicated.
• Makes routine rounds to assure proper care and a safe, clean resident environment.
• Assures accuracy and completeness of medical records.
• Coordinates, conducts, and documents the MDS, resident care plans and conference in the absence of the MDS nurse.
• Supervises nursing personnel on all shifts; participates in staffing, scheduling, counseling, orientation, and evaluation of nursing staff.
• Assists with orientation of nursing personnel.
• Participates in family/resident counseling.
• Responds to emergency calls as necessary.
• Functions in the capacity of DON in his/her absence.
• Assures effective communication with other shifts and departments as it relates to resident care.
• Some "on call" is required.
• Assures timeliness of physician visits.
• Accompanies physicians when making rounds.
• Notifies physician and family of changes in resident’s condition.
• Encourages rehabilitative techniques in order to restore residents’ independence.
• Assures proper functioning of medical equipment and adequate medical supplies.
• Assists DON in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
• Assists in infection control, safety and pharmacy rounds and audits.
• Attends in-service training and education sessions, as assigned.
• Performs specific work duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and registered nurse with a current license in the community’s state.
• Two years experience in geriatric nursing and/or B.S. degree in nursing; participation in professional organizations, dealing primarily in geriatrics preferred; minimum of two years nursing administration experience, preferably in a long‑term care setting; NADONA certification a plus.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to move throughout the facility promptly, especially in emergency situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and up to 150 lbs. with the assistance of one. Must be able to stoop, bend, and reach; must be able to push and pull up to 150 lbs in a wheelchair; good visual and hearing acuity required; good verbal communication skills required.

Must be able to walk or stand for up to 80% of the workday. Must be free of communicable disease; may be exposed to communicable diseases, and blood and body fluids that may contain HIV and/or HBV. May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and offensive odors.
