Patient Care Technician / Certified Nursing Assistant Residency Program
Christiana Care offers a 10‑week paid residency program that combines classroom instruction with clinical training to prepare candidates for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) role. The program begins on Monday, July 6 or Monday, August 17, 2026.
Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent, possess a Basic Life‑Saving Skills (BCLS) certification, and must not have completed a nursing assistant course or have prior patient care experience. The starting hourly rate is $16.50 with healthcare benefits during training, and tuition is fully paid.
Responsibilities- Perform daily living activities: bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and mobilizing patients.
- Record vital signs, Accu‑checks, and other patient data accurately.
- Respond to patient crisis situations, initiating interventions within scope and notifying the RN.
- Perform finger sticks and other lab procedures following safety policies.
- Execute point‑of‑care instrument procedures as instructed.
- Provide 1:1 observation for patients experiencing psychiatric crises or identified as at risk.
- Communicate with patients, staff, and physicians using courteous verbal and written skills.
- Complete mandatory in‑service education and adhere to departmental safety rules.
- Report unsafe activities, conditions, or hazards to supervisors in a timely manner.
- Perform additional duties as required by unit leadership.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- BCLS Certification required, or acceptance into a Christiana Care‑approved Patient Care Technician training program.
- Ability to stand for 8–12 hours, walk, sit, bend, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, and climb as required.
- Daily contact with patients, families, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers, and students.
- Frequent exposure to biological elements with occasional exposure to chemical and environmental elements.
- Knowledge of basic nursing care for the unit’s patient population.
- Understanding of department standards, procedures, and nursing practice guidelines.
- Ability to identify patient needs and provide appropriate care.
- Ability to work quickly and accurately.
- Recognition of changes in patient status, with prompt action and notification to the RN.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic math skills.
- Use of safety measures for patients, employees, and self.
- Adherence to universal precautions.
- Judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
- Response to patient crisis situations under RN direction following Christiana Care protocol.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills.
- Collaborative and team‑focused environment.
