Senior Metrology Technician, R&D

Hologic is seeking a Senior Metrology Technician, R&D to support Mechanical R&D engineering activities through dimensional inspection, metrology programming, equipment maintenance, and calibration support. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented metrology professional with strong hands-on measurement experience, excellent technical judgment, and the ability to partner closely with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams. This role is located in Newark, DE and will require onsite presence.

As a Senior Metrology Technician, R&D, you will perform precise dimensional inspections and help maintain the accuracy and readiness of metrology equipment used across R&D activities. In this position, you will play a key role in supporting product development, prototype evaluation, verification activities, and measurement strategy execution for fabricated components and assemblies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with engineers and engineering technicians to collect, analyze, and document dimensional inspection data.
  • Developing, validating, and maintaining inspection programs using PC-DMIS and associated metrology software.
  • Operating metrology and inspection equipment, including:
    • Coordinate Measuring Machines, or CMMs
    • Portable CMM arms
    • Laser scanning systems
    • Keyence vision systems
    • Optical comparators
    • Conventional handheld measurement tools and gauges
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
  • Developing and executing inspection procedures, measurement plans, and inspection strategies.
  • Designing and implementing fixture solutions to support accurate, repeatable inspections.
  • Ensuring metrology and inspection equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and operational.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, prioritizing, and resolving inspection and measurement issues.
  • Supporting installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance activities for inspection equipment where applicable.
  • Conducting inspection studies, measurement system analyses, and capability assessments to support engineering and quality objectives.
  • Creating, maintaining, and improving SOPs, work instructions, and related documentation.
  • Supporting prototype, verification, validation, and product development activities through accurate and timely measurement services.
  • Recommending process improvements, measurement enhancements, and efficiency opportunities based on direct observations and technical expertise.
  • Building strong working relationships with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and other site stakeholders.
  • Supporting and complying with the Quality Policy and Quality Management System procedures.

What We're Looking For:

  • We are looking for someone who brings strong technical metrology experience, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently on moderately complex assignments.
  • The successful candidate will be comfortable working from drawings, specifications, and verbal or written instructions while helping determine appropriate inspection methods and measurement strategies.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma/GED or associate degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 2–4 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience with PC-DMIS is required.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Strong understanding of metrology principles and dimensional inspection techniques.
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, or GD&T.
  • Experience operating CMMs, portable CMM arms, laser scanners, vision systems, optical comparators, and handheld measurement tools.
  • Ability to develop, validate, and maintain inspection programs.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical inspection and measurement issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and technical teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
  • Ability to recommend practical process and measurement improvements.
