Under general supervision performs skilled work in the areas of legally required testing and service of fire suppression systems and associated electronic/electrical signaling components throughout the University’s facilities. Using both preventive and applied maintenance techniques, independently performs testing and service of fire suppression systems including but not limited to fire pumps, standpipe systems, flow and tamper switching devices as required by prevailing national, state, and local codes.

Maintains all equipment in a safe operating manner and in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements.

Examples of Work
  • Tests for proper operation of fire suppression system components including but not limited to control valves, drains, inspector test valves, electronic alarm system interface devices, tamper switches, flow switches, and water driven alarm gongs and halon systems;
  • Inspects standpipe systems service, electric fire pumps and performs limited service to equipment;
  • Oversees contracted personnel performing preventive maintenance of primary movers testing; provides limited service to engine driven fire pumps;
  • Monitors the contracted personnel performing tests and providing service for specialized suppression systems; informs the Department of Occupational health and Safety and Department of Public Safety as necessary;
  • Records and maintains manual and computerized testing and service records as required by City of Newark, and the State of Delaware Fire Prevention Regulation Code; records and maintains records as well for any alternations, additions or deletions made to the fire suppression systems campus wide;
  • Uses computer to access e-mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms;
  • Communicates daily using a two-way radio, to respond to work-related routine and emergency information;
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies;
  • Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned;
Environmental Factors/Occupational Exposures
  • The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32°F for more than one-hour periods.
  • Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport, with or without assistance, both small and heavy equipment and material, as necessary.
  • The employee is required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of times while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and/or in confined space areas.
  • Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity, chemicals, gases, fumes, vibration, and asbestos. For this reason, employees are required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, gloves, hearing protection, and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles. A respirator and/or specialized personal protective equipment may be required to make access to certain confined spaces.

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Journeymen level knowledge of fire suppression systems and all related components as to repair, maintenance and operation; working knowledge of electronic and line voltage electrical motor control principles.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and ensure compliance with national and local code requirements including but not limited to NFPA 72G, 13 A-D, 14, 20, 70, 101, City of Newark, and Delaware State Fire Prevention.
  • Ability to read and work independently from drawings and blueprints.
