Context of Job

Under general supervision of the Manager of Electronic Services or designee, performs skilled work at the journeyman level of electronic access control systems for all campus buildings and other assigned areas.

Installs, maintains, programs, and troubleshoots electronic card access systems and/or operating errors. Maintains access and alarm system interfaces as well as other custom applications such as CCTV.

Major Responsibilities
  • Installs, programs and maintains electronic card access systems, door alarms, CCTV, system interfaces, handicap entrances and parking gates; recommends system upgrades and responds to technical and/or upgrade inquiries.
  • Determines what parts are required, including electronic interfaces; locates the part, orders parts and materials as needed, including making parts if necessary.
  • Creates and/or installs new parts as required, including electronic interfaces.
  • Conducts on‑site training sessions for other U.D. mechanics and vendor staff.
  • Programs operating system commands in system software, troubleshoots software operating errors.
  • Assists in data communications design, installation and repairs; installs network communication devices including serial interface devices such as Lantronix systems.
  • Maintains access card record embedded in software, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems dedicated to access control, and time and material records.
  • Prepares work reports in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Conducts related maintenance inspections and preventive maintenance on systems such as UPS, electric strikes, security systems, life safety emergency buttons, and Lantronix Cobox systems.
  • Uses computer to access e‑mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms.
  • Communicates daily using a two‑way radio, and/or phone system in order to respond to work‑related routine and emergency information.
  • Ensures shop equipment and diagnostic tools are in proper working condition including the access system host computer.
  • Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe work environment.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Environmental Factors / Occupational Exposures
  • The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32°F for more than one‑hour periods.
  • Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport both small and heavy equipment and material, with or without assistance, as necessary.
  • The employee may be required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of time while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and/or in confined space areas.
  • Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration.
  • Employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI‑approved safety eyewear, hard hats, gloves, hearing protection, full face shield, aprons and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles.
  • Must be able to wear designated respirator when required as part of the personal protective equipment.
