Overview
Under direct or general supervision, the Journeyman Lineman performs construction and maintenance work on dead or energized conductors, structures, and equipment used in the transmission and distribution of electrical energy. The role includes the following primary duties and related work as required.
Primary Duties- Regularly performs the most complicated construction and maintenance work on energized conductors, structures, and equipment.
- Installs, maintains, removes or replaces underground and overhead systems, including splicing of rubber-insulated non-leaded cable; performs phasing and phase rotation on polyphase circuits; executes distribution and transmission switching and sectionalizing when required; traces and clears grounds and opens on series circuits.
- Installs, tests, maintains, removes or replaces transformers, regulators, relays, lightning arresters, and other allied equipment and control apparatus.
- Installs or assists in installing instrument transformers; installs, removes, connects or disconnects electric meters and services.
- Performs load and voltage tests; patrols transmission and distribution lines, inspects related equipment, or refines transformers when required.
- Conducts minor piping, painting, excavating; places forms for foundations and performs simple concrete work; erects steel structures; places or removes heavy equipment; performs other allied work.
- Ensures observance of all safety rules and that proper clearance and grounding are established for self and colleagues.
- Performs incidental clerical work as required.
- Directs and instructs other assistants on assigned tasks.
- Takes training to maintain proficiency.
- Operates automotive equipment and required line construction equipment.
- Must be able to work on all energized and de-energized distribution voltages and de-energized transmission voltages.
- Takes necessary training for advancement to Lead Lineman.
- After two (2) years in grade, leads a two-man bucket crew.
- One year as an Apprentice Lineman "A" or other equally acceptable training or experience.
- Passes all written and hands‑on tests required of Apprentice Lineman "A" and any additional testing required by the Company.
- Possesses or can promptly obtain the appropriate vehicle operator's license.
- Good general health and a strong physique adequate for strenuous work; may be required to undergo a physical examination.
- Possesses a considerable degree of skill or acumen to perform semi‑routine work by following standard procedures.
- Has thorough knowledge of the layout and characteristics of transmission and distribution lines, equipment, and control apparatus in the assigned area.
- Has a thorough working knowledge of electrical fundamentals related to construction, maintenance, and operation of conductors, structures, equipment, and control apparatus on the Company’s or customers’ properties.
- Is familiar with the Company’s line construction and maintenance practices and standards.
- Can exercise judgment acceptable to the Company in matters of moderate importance and limited scope.
- Is qualified to regularly direct and instruct others on related work.
- Is familiar with the Company’s electrical switching, tagging, and grounding procedures.
- Willing and able to work extra and/or irregular hours and under unusual or special conditions.
- Is familiar with the Company’s safety rules applicable to this job and can apply resuscitation and basic first aid if required.
- Wears clothing that contains no exposed metal components when working on or near uncovered energized structures or equipment; avoids flowing garments; keeps hair short or bound; wears required protection equipment at all times.
- Reads, writes, and communicates effectively in English.
- Willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and be available for call‑out overtime.
- Hourly rate: $57.96 per hour, based on skills, qualifications, experience, or collective bargaining agreement.
- Annual bonus (eligible positions): 4%.
