Overview

Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking a Law School Career Counseling Officer. The officer reports to the Assistant Dean for Career Development and plays a critical role in managing and supervising the daily operations of the Center for Career Development.

Responsibilities
  • Plays a key role in career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, with particular emphasis on employer relations and part‑time student and alumni counseling
  • Develops and implements a wide range of programs, events, and activities aimed at increasing the knowledge base of students and alumni and improving the visibility of the law school in the broader legal community, and implements the law school’s employer outreach program
  • Works independently within broadly defined work objectives
  • Performs professional work requiring specialized knowledge of legal education, the diverse practice settings and practice areas, and practical innovative job search techniques and strategies
  • Develops and manages marketing outreach strategies to encourage employers to hire law school students and graduates
  • Identifies strategic and geographic growth areas and develops best practices and innovative outreach programs to establish and enhance recruiting relationships, especially with large law firms
  • Represents and markets the law school through on‑ and off‑campus employer visits
  • Engages with bar associations and other professional groups, regularly attending programs and events
  • Supports employer diversity initiatives through outreach with the Minority Student Program and the law school’s student affinity groups
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of career counseling theories and methodologies for individuals and groups, career development, career coaching/advising, talent development, or similar experience, preferably in a law school environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • J.D. or equivalent legal degree
  • Knowledge of the legal employment market
  • Ability to market the law school to attorneys, recruiters, and other legal professionals and employers
  • Exemplary judgment and ability to make independent decisions within defined practices and procedures
  • Exemplary administrative, analytic, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with excellent oral and written proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
  • In‑depth knowledge of legal environments and legal practice experience

  • Some travel and regular evening hours are required

Immunization Requirements
