The Superintendent invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Bridge Coach with the Office of Student Support Services.
DefinitionThe Newark Board of Education is looking to hire a college student, who is a graduate of Newark Public Schools, to serve as a Bridge Coach, who will work with graduating high school seniors to help them apply to and matriculate into college. Bridge Coaches will work under the supervision of the designated school counselor from August 2024 to August 2025.
Bridge Coaches will be responsible for working approximately 430 hours over the course of the year (including virtual and in‑person training, and in‑person school‑based work).
- Currently attending college in New Jersey
- Graduate of a Newark Public School
- Enrolled part‑time or full‑time in college as a Sophomore or Junior, in good standing, during the 2024‑25 school year
- Strong written and verbal communication and time‑management skills
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting student opportunity and success
- Letter of recommendation from a current professor or mentor
- Proficient in Microsoft and Google Suite
- School Year:
August 2024 – June 2025 - Work on‑site at the school approximately 10 hours per week from September to June to assist students with paperwork and tasks involved in applying for college and career opportunities, including college applications and enrollment process.
- Attend all College Bridge and Mentor Newark training (in‑person and virtual) starting in August.
- Facilitate workshops for seniors throughout the year and help plan and lead school‑wide events and trips related to the college process.
- Support students through the financial aid application and verification process.
- Track student progress through the college application process and meet weekly with the college counselor to review all graduating seniors’ status to guide the work that should be completed.
- Summer:
July 2025 – August 2025 - Work approximately 10 hours per week in July and August of 2025 to assist students with the paperwork and tasks involved in enrolling in post‑secondary destinations.
- Attend all College Bridge and Mentor Newark training (in‑person and virtual).
- Track student progress through application and matriculation steps and meet weekly with the supervisor to review students’ progress.
- Ability to work in‑person at high school placement.
- Understanding of obstacles encountered in applying to and registering for college.
- Strong written and verbal communication and time‑management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting student opportunity and success.
School Guidance Counselor
Salary, Employment Period, and Union Affiliation- Salary:
Annual stipend of $7,310 (paid monthly) - Employment period:
August 2024 – August 2025 - Schedule:
Approximately 10 hours per week during the school year (Fall: 16 training hours, 126 work hours; Winter/Spring: 22 training hours, 200 work hours; Summer: 6 training hours, 60 work hours). Total 430 hours. - Union affiliation:
