- EIPA Certification with a score of 3.0 or higher
- Completion of the Educational Interpreter Training Classes including:
- Ethics and Laws for Educational Interpreters
- Methods of Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Deaf‑Blind interpreting for Educational Interpreters
- Language Development for Educational Interpreters
- Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university, or recognized performance route certification
- Ability to work effectively with parents, students, administrators, and teachers
- Ability to produce accessible language and understand child and adolescent signers
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Fluency in various forms of communication including ASL or other sign language as determined by the educational team
- Knowledge of language development of Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing children
- Ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultures
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
- Interpret, transliterate and facilitate integration of Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students, providing access to the curriculum in a mode appropriate to the student’s language use, as outlined in the student’s IEP
- Perform interpretation services for Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students simultaneously and consecutively in a variety of situations
- Assist classroom teacher in delivery of an effective instructional program
- Work with individual hearing‑impaired students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher to students with hearing loss
- Model social strategies to encourage interaction between sign‑language users and those who do not use sign language
- For those with appropriate certification, perform oral interpretation; present spoken messages utilizing clear mouth movements, and, if necessary, orally repeat spoken message for hearing individual
- Interpret for individual or small groups of students and staff members with auditory disabilities in classroom, field trips or assembly programs
- Assist teacher of the deaf and supervisor of the auditory impairments program in exploring and identifying communication needs of students with hearing loss
- Assist instructional leader with appropriate use and care of classroom amplification systems which allow auditory access to those students capable of using residual hearing
- Report malfunction/inappropriate use of such equipment to appropriate professionals for repair
- Assist students with hearing loss to master use of amplification technology and to independently advocate for appropriate accommodations
- Assist with supervision of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students during emergency drills, assemblies and field trips
- Read and adhere to the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
- Display highest ethical and professional standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
- Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of professional duties and use discretion in sharing information within legal confines
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations and Board of Education policies
- Serve as a role model for students, dress and groom professionally, and demonstrate pride in the profession of interpreting
- Provide technical assistance in development of workshops, seminars and other programs on needs and cultural mediation of the Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing community
