Position: Parent Liaison School Year 2026-27 (NBOE)

Parent Liaison/Senior Community Aide Schools

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Parent Liaison/Senior Community Aide Schools at New Media High School. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission.

Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

Under supervision, performs the more responsible non-professional field and office work and/or may take the lead over one or more Community Aides, Schools in interpreting the role of the schools and related program to parents and community members; does related work as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. One year of experience in community service work involved in explaining the role of the local school system and related educational programs to residents of the community.
3. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Note:

Satisfactory completion of 30 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required work experience.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities

1. Arranges for the conducting of workshops at various schools for parents of children that are educationally and socially deprived in order to inform them of the education program's provisions, services, and other functions offered within the school system.
2. Compiles and collects basic information and material to help the school involve the parents in the activities of the children.
3. Coordinates community wide conferences with parents in order to involve them in their children's education.
4. Conducts meetings with parents and interprets and explains the various provisions of the education program so that they are able to help their children at home.
5. Meets with parent groups and helps individual parents resolve problems with their children by making referrals to appropriate persons in order to have problem corrected.
6. Compiles information about the educational program and prepares literature for distribution to the parents, informing them of the program and showing them basic skills to be used at home in helping their children with their school work.
7. Conducts various workshops for parents of school children.
8. Confers with local parent council chairpersons and aids them in developing the skills and knowledge needed to function effectively in their positions.
9. Confers and works with school principals, teachers, guidance and other professional staff, as well as parents and other concerned individuals regarding problems affecting the students' progress and achievements, behavior, personal well-being or other school-related problems they may be experiencing.
10. Assists in the interpretation of school and program policies, regulations or activities to the students and their parents.
11. Serves as liaison between the parents and the school district and with social agencies committed to the welfare of the student.
12. Develops rapport with students, their parents and school officials in the interest of promoting the proper adjustment and progress of the students.
13. In some work situations the Parent Liaison/Senior Community Aide, Schools in addition to or independent of the functions described above may exercise "leadership" over the work performed by other employees by performing most of the leadership responsibilities described below.
14. Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and that each employee has enough work to be kept busy.
15. Observing the status and progress of the work and making necessary adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
16. Notifying the supervisor as to the works progress and status and requesting advice or needed information as to problems that arise, passing on to the other workers the instructions received from the supervisor, and demonstrating proper work methods.
17. Answering questions of other workers as to procedures, policies, regulations, and instructions and instructing them in specific tasks and job techniques, checking on work in progress and completed to see whether the supervisor's instructions have been carried out properly.
18. Answering question of the supervisor on overall work operations and problems.
