Posting Summary

Rutgers University – Newark, an urban public research anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking an Interim Assistant Dean – Director of Minority Student Program (MSP). The MSP, established in 1968, is a nationally recognized model for opening the doors of the legal profession to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented communities. It offers legal skills development, academic support, alumni mentoring, networking, and internship opportunities and has more than 3,000 alumni who have served on the bench, in Congress, in private practice, in corporations, government agencies, legislative bodies, public‑interest organizations, and academic institutions.

Recruitment and outreach efforts are a core responsibility, with strategic collaboration across the law school and broader university to attract and support diverse students.

Responsibilities
  • Organizes and implements academic development programs such as Legal Skills and Study Groups in collaboration with the Academic Success Program.
  • In collaboration with the Dean and the Admissions Committee, develops and implements targeted recruitment efforts to attract diverse applicants to the Law School and the Minority Student Program, including developing, supervising, and implementing programs—locally—to build a pipeline of future MSP applicants.
  • Plans and organizes events designed to raise awareness of the need to expand access to law school for underrepresented and disadvantaged communities.
Salary

$108,000 (minimum) – $150,000

Work Arrangement

Consistent with Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024 and are not guaranteed beyond that date. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience (Option
1):

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires a minimum of three to five years of relevant professional experience in an administrative and/or supervisory function, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.

Minimum Education and Experience (Option
2):

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education/experience in the discipline. A master's degree in a specialized discipline may be required, particularly in research, project management, or managerial positions.
  • Requires a minimum of five years experience and/or increasing functional responsibility in a leadership/managerial role. With a master's degree requirement, a minimum of three years of related experience is acceptable.
  • Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • J.D. from an ABA‑approved law school with strong academic credentials. Current or prior admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • A minimum of 5 years of law‑related experience, post law school graduation.
  • Exemplary professional, administrative, analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Excellent oral and written proficiency as well as strong organizational abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and administrators.
