Posting Summary

The New Ark Freedom School (NAFS) aims to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self‑esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. A product of the Civil Rights Movement and 1964 Freedom Summer, NAFS serves 3rd - 8th grade families at Thirteenth Avenue Elementary School, over six weeks, using the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School model.

The Site Coordinator will support the implantation of the Promise Youth University and New Ark Freedom School Programs at 13th Avenue Elementary School. The Promise Youth University serves students from grades three through eight, including students with special needs. It will consist of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) themed programs. The position reports to the Project Director.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the program director with coordinating the New Ark Freedom School program delivery at 13th Avenue School.
  • Serves as liaison between students, teachers, partners, and school administration to support effective program delivery.
  • Responsible for supporting youth development in all aspects of after‑school programming for all participants; assists with setting up the program with the Project Director.
  • Supports the execution of special program events, including family engagement nights, national day of social action, and lights on after‑school. Attends all required training, including, but not limited to New Staff orientation, Site Coordinator Orientation (freedom School), and the Ella Baker Child Policy Training.
  • Works with the Project Director to ensure program curriculums and models are implemented to fidelity.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team.
  • Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of all cultures.
  • Exhibit positive attitude; model a mature and professional demeanor.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Reside near Newark area for duration of training and summer program.
  • Valid  reliable transportation.
  • Satisfactory drug test and satisfactory background check for criminal and child protective findings.
