POSITION OVERVIEW

The Newark Board of Education is inviting qualified personnel to apply for the Teacher of Special Education position at Michelle Obama Elementary School. This role offers the opportunity to make learning limitless for students with disabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate, Certificate of Eligibility (CE) or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) in Students with Disabilities along with a primary certification appropriate to the subject or grade level to be taught.
  • Current and valid teaching certificate in the appropriate subject/content area issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Ability to perform essential functions, including reasonable accommodation for persons with mental or physical disabilities.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and prepare progress reports.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship, basic communications skills, and other general elements of the curriculum common to all teachers.
  • Provide individual, small, and/or large group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and special abilities.
  • Instruct pupils in proper care and use of textbooks, equipment, and materials.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly and productive environment.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional materials, equipment, and aids, and maintain required inventory records.
  • Develop instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction.
  • Develop and maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervise out-of-classroom activities for pupils during the assigned working day, as required.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
  • Identify pupil's needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicate with parents and pupil personnel staff members on the individual pupil's progress and development.
  • Maintain attendance accounting and business services as required.
  • Develop and participate in the sponsorship of student activities and faculty committees.
  • Act as a resource person on an interdepartmental level to relate appropriate aspects of his/her subject area to other subject areas.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning academic and behavioral progress.
  • Perform other duties and tasks assigned by Supervisor.
