Interim Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Rutgers University – Newark, an urban public research anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Interim Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Interim Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (EVCAA) serves as the chief academic officer of Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) and is the University's principal academic architect. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving on the Chancellor's cabinet, the EVCAA provides forward-thinking leadership to elevate academic excellence, scholarship, student success, and operational effectiveness at a highly diverse, urban public research university that is nationally recognized for social mobility, access and opportunity.
The EVCAA partners closely with Rutgers University's Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Rutgers-Newark Chancellor to translate vision into execution– aligning academic strategy, resources, and performance systems to strengthen RU-N's scholarly impact, teaching and learning excellence, national reputation and ranking, and Big Ten footprint. Additionally, the EVCAA partners with University Academic Affairs and RU-N for academic planning, accreditation, faculty affairs and institutional effectiveness.
Alignment with RU's and RU-N's strategic plan will be paramount. The EVCAA must also work closely with Enrollment Management, Student Affairs and Student Success to advance strategy, student success outcomes and academic priorities. Rutgers-Newark, established in 1946, is one of the four Chancellor-led units of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and serves as the university system's urban public research university.
As an integral part of Rutgers University, Rutgers-Newark combines the strength and reputation of a major Big Ten public research institution with the agility and community engagement of a deeply urban campus. Rutgers-Newark is an anchor institution "of and in Newark," enrolling a majority-Pell, first-generation and commuter student body, and ranked #5 nationally for social mobility while climbing steadily in public university ranking (currently 36th in the nation).
Within this context, the EVCAA leads the academic enterprise, leading schools and colleges and academic affairs units central to institutional research and assessment, student success, portions of faculty affairs, graduate and undergraduate education, and university-wide centers and institutes. The role requires a leader who can partner effectively with the research division to expand research capacity among faculty and strengthen academic rankings;
while also upholding RU-N's mission of access and excellence. As both a strategic and operational leader, the EVCAA is responsible for strengthening academic quality and execution across a complex institution. This position is responsible for and not limited to the following: improving academic planning and program portfolios, modernizing policies and processes, extended academic reach through innovative and market-responsive online programs and certificates, advancing data-informed decision making and ensuring accreditation and compliance.
The EVCAA must be future-forward in building opportunity pathways from cradle to college degree, as the university partners with Newark, the state of New Jersey and the nation in workforce development and expansion. The EVCAA plays a defining role in enhancing RU-N's academic reputation, rankings and visibility – positioning the University as a high-impact, research-intensive, public urban institution whose scholarship, graduates and partnerships drive social mobility, economic vitality and community transformation.
