Position Summary

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for creating an engaging, welcoming, and innovative library experience for children from birth through high school and their caregivers. This position develops high-quality programs, builds and maintains an outstanding children’s collection, fosters relationships with local schools and community organizations, and actively promotes library services to encourage lifelong reading and learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Programming

Plan, develop, promote, and present engaging educational and recreational programs for children from birth through high school.

Host two weekly Movers & Groovers sessions.

Plan and host one Fridays Unplugged after-school program each month for middle school students.

Present at least one toddler/preschool program each month.

Present at least one elementary-aged program each month.

Develop additional innovative programs that respond to community interests and needs.

Evaluate program attendance and participant feedback to continually improve offerings.

Select, evaluate, and maintain the children’s collection in a variety of formats.

Weed and refresh the collection to ensure it remains current, diverse, and appealing.

Provide reader’s advisory and reference assistance to children, parents, caregivers, and educators.

Promote children’s collections to encourage increased circulation.

Community Engagement & Outreach

Build and maintain strong relationships with local preschools, elementary and middle schools, homeschool groups, and community organizations.

Represent the library at community events and outreach opportunities.

Collaborate with community partners to develop programs and services that support literacy and lifelong learning.

Marketing & Promotion

Actively promote children’s services, programs, and collections.

Create engaging content for the library’s social media platforms.

Assist with newsletters, flyers, displays, and other promotional materials.

Help increase awareness of library services and encourage greater participation.

Customer Service

Provide friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable service to children and their families.

Assist patrons in locating materials, using library resources, and discovering new books.

Foster a positive and inclusive environment where all children feel welcome.

Education

An MLS is an asset, but the qualities that matter most are energy, creativity, initiative, and a deep commitment to creating exceptional library experiences for children and their families. Candidates with a background in education, early childhood, youth programming, museums, camps, or other child-focused fields are encouraged to apply.
