Role Description

The ELA & Special Education Teacher is a full-time, on-site role based at Discovery Charter School in Newark, NJ. This educator designs and delivers standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction for middle school students while providing specialized support for learners with disabilities. Day-to-day responsibilities include planning and implementing differentiated lessons, developing and modifying individualized education plans (IEPs), and using data to monitor student progress in reading, writing, and critical thinking.

The teacher collaborates with colleagues, support staff, and families to create an inclusive classroom environment, implements appropriate accommodations and interventions, and maintains accurate documentation. Additional responsibilities include classroom management, participation in professional development, and contributing to the school community through meetings, events, and student enrichment activities.

Qualifications
  • Teaching and Middle School skills, including experience planning and delivering standards-based ELA instruction for upper elementary or middle grades.
  • Special Education and Disabilities expertise, including knowledge of IEP development, accommodations, and inclusive practices for diverse learners.
  • Strong Communication skills for collaborating with students, families, colleagues, and support staff, including clear written and verbal communication.
  • Relevant state teaching certification in ELA and/or Special Education, or eligibility to obtain certification within required timelines.
  • Experience with data-driven instruction, classroom management, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small school setting and commitment to the mission of nurturing lifelong learners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, English, or a related field; advanced degree or specialized training in special education is beneficial.
