Teacher - Physical Education

The Physical Education/ Health Teacher is hired by High Point School administration and is fully certified according to New Jersey Department of Education requirements. The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising developmentally appropriate physical education programming that promotes students' physical fitness, motor skill development, social-emotional growth, and overall well-being within a therapeutic special education environment.

• Experience adapting physical education activities for students with behavioral, emotional, and/or
• Experience implementing physical activity within trauma-informed and behaviorally supportive environments

• Ability to actively supervise students during structured and unstructured physical activities.
• Ability to follow through with safety protocols and maintain attention to detail in dynamic environments.
• Ability to move throughout the gym and activity spaces, demonstrate physical activities, and actively engage with students.
• Strong verbal communication skills for providing clear instructions, cues, and redirection during physical activity.
• Ability to use technology, including educational software for documentation and data tracking.
• Ability to respond calmly and effectively during behavioral escalations that may occur during physical activity.

• Responsible for the overall welfare and safety of students during physical education classes.
• Designs and implements physical education lessons aligned with students’ Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), focusing on physical fitness, motor development, teamwork, self-regulation, and sportsmanship.
• Provides direct instruction, modeling, and supervision during physical activities, including gym-based exercises and outdoor field activities,
• Actively supervises and supports students during transitions to and from the gym, outdoor fields, and activity spaces.
• Required to maintain current CPR and First Aid certification.
• Utilizes positive behavioral supports and adheres to the school-wide behavior and level system during all physical education activities.

Frequent standing (50% or more of the workday) is required while providing instruction, demonstrations, supervision, and active engagement in physical education activities.

Frequent walking and movement (50% or more of the workday) is required during Physical education classes, transitions, outdoor activities, drills, and emergency procedures.

Frequent bending, squatting, and kneeling (up to 50% or more of the workday) is required when assisting students, setting up equipment, or retrieving items from the floor.

Frequent balance (50% or more of the workday) is required when supervising physically active students, navigating uneven or outdoor terrain, and responding to safety or behavioral situations.

Frequent gripping, grasping, and fine/gross motor control (50% or more of the workday) is required when handling equipment, documenting activities, and assisting with student support as needed.
