Overview
- The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.

Posting Summary
- Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer I for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Manager of Engineering is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Cogeneration power and heating Plants and auxiliary equipment entrusted to their care. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Operates, maintains turbine generators, stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment in the Newark Power Plants, including 65 Bergen Street, Plant, ICPHandRBLFacilities.
  • Operates maintains and makes minor and emergency repairs to various types of generators, motors, pumps, turbines, vacuum units, blowers, refrigeration equipment, cooling towers, gas compressors, air compressors, chemical treatment systems, continuous emission monitoring System and auxiliary equipment.
  • Periodically makes comprehensive tests, takes readings of fuel consumption pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, steam flow and other recordings.
  • Receives, stores, safeguards and records the use of equipment, materials and supplies. Keeps inventory system up to date. Follows all operational procedures.
  • Adds chemicals to treat steam, water, fuel in accordance with requirements prescribed.
  • Completes all paperwork in a timely manner. Maintains the logs, records and files of the Power Plants.
  • Gives detail exchange of information to relieving operator. Continually inspects equipment, uses knowledge of Plant layout and learns alternate ways of maintaining continuous operation.
  • Analyzes problems, both causes and effects, and takes corrective action when necessary and reports condition to the Manager of Engineering.

Minimum Salary - 39.260

Mid Range Salary - 39.760

Maximum Salary - 40.950
