The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs approximately 2,700 staff and manages a range of institutional strategic and operational initiatives across New Jersey, including facilities, public safety, environmental health, transportation, housing, and auxiliary services.
Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer II to operate, maintain, and repair stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment at the Newark campus under the direction of the Chief Newark Central Heating Plant.
Key Responsibilities- Operate the power plant at maximum efficiency to minimize energy consumption.
- Perform routine operation, maintenance, and repair of boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, blowers, valves, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Conduct comprehensive tests, record readings, and maintain logs for fuel consumption, water conditions, pressures, temperatures, steam flow, and other operational metrics.
- Add chemicals to treat steam, water, and fuel per prescribed requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and complete all required paperwork promptly.
- Inspect equipment and systems, report findings to the Chief, and provide corrective actions as needed.
- Be available for all power plant emergencies.
- Train new employees on power plant operations and routine procedures.
- Use computerized monitoring systems and work order systems to support plant operations.
- Perform additional physical plant/power plant duties as assigned.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating and maintaining stationary steam boilers, chillers, turbines, generators, or auxiliary equipment in a high‑pressure power plant environment.
- Valid driver’s license and completion of Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
- Blue Seal License.
- Experience with chiller plant operations.
- Computer skills in CMMS and plant monitoring systems.

Grade 235:
Minimum $35.050, Mid‑Range $35.550, Maximum $36.620 per hour or equivalent year‑to‑date figure.

The role requires standing, walking, and repetitive use of hands and arms for up to 2/3 of the time, frequent reaching, stooping, kneeling, and occasional climbing of ladders. Lifting up to 100 pounds may occur under 1/3 of the time. Work is performed in wet, humid, and hot conditions, around moving machinery, fumes, chemicals, and exposure to noise and vibration. Protective equipment is provided.
