Role Description
Arcadis is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Tunnel Engineering SME/Senior Tunnel Engineer to support one of the most iconic and consequential infrastructure initiatives in the United States—the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP).
We are working in partnership with Parsons and Mace as part of the MPA Delivery Partner team, selected by the Gateway Development Commission to deliver this transformative project. The HTP is a critical component of the broader Gateway Program—one of the most ambitious and impactful transportation initiatives in the nation—and is designed to strengthen mobility, enhance resiliency, and ensure the long‑term reliability of the Northeast Corridor.
The project encompasses the construction of a new, two-track rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River, along with the full rehabilitation of the existing 113‑year‑old North River Tunnel. This vital infrastructure supports more than 200,000 daily passengers via Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT and serves as a backbone for economic activity and connectivity between New York and New Jersey.
As part of this high‑performing multidisciplinary team, you will help deliver excellence on one of the most technically complex and high‑profile projects in the world.
Role Accountabilities- Lead and supervise tunnel construction activities, including excavation, ground support system installation, waterproofing, and final lining construction, ensuring strict adherence to design specifications and safety protocols.
- Monitor Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations and ensure proper functioning, efficiency, and alignment with geotechnical assessments and excavation strategies.
- Interpret and analyze geotechnical and geological data to inform tunneling approaches, support system selection, and risk mitigation measures.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs meet applicable engineering codes, project requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Contribute technical expertise during the planning, design, and construction phases of tunneling projects, including design reviews, constructability assessments, and value engineering.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and field staff, fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in client meetings, technical presentations, and progress reporting as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in tunnel engineering, including design, construction, and oversight of TBM projects.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, tunnel lining systems, waterproofing methods, and ground behavior.
- Proven experience with tunnel risk management, safety procedures, and quality assurance/quality control practices.
- Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., AASHTO, ASTM, FHWA, ITA).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience working on large‑scale infrastructure or transportation projects such as subways, railways, highways, or water conveyance tunnels.
- Involvement in design‑build or alternative delivery projects.
